Solved Ship progression through the ages

I started a game with Bartholomeu o Portuguese but have basically just been playing like a sandbox. The year is 1663. Am I in the first "era" of the build mod? As time progresses will I move to the next era and start to see ships that hadn't existed when I started? Ie will I ever see a steam ship? Even if it's 1850?

The time period is set when you start a new game and does not change throughout the game.
If you want to try another period, a new game is required. The reason is to keep things somewhat simplish.

You'll have a hard time playing from 1663 until 1850 anyway!

Bartolomeu o Portugues is set in The Spanish Main which is the second time period.
There is one set before (Early Explorers for the Devlin Opera) and there are six time periods in total.
The steam frigates appear in the last two: Revolutions and Napoleonic.
