Ship Upgrade

Scoundrel

Sailor Apprentice
Whole idea of upgrading ship is very good.
BUT...
Are there any plans on expanding it? More upgrades would be nice addition istelf, but how about the possibility of changing ships stats itself. Im thinking about somethink like sacrificing part of crew quarters or even transforming part of cannon deck into cargo hold. Leeser crew and cannons but greater capacity would be great thing for merchants.
Somewhere on forum I saw topic on adding slaves as tradable... well... goods. This also would require proper preparation of cargo hold.

But regardless of this mod growth possibilities it would be helpfull to have possibility of checking ships stats as if it were without any upgrades.
When Im capturing new ship I have to save and remove all my upgrades to check if new one is by any chance better. Or evet take it to pirate settlement if I already have flush deck upgrade. Very uncomfortable.

and for this cargo suggestions...
I always thought that weapon prices are ridiculous. Some cheapass sabre costs more than few cwt of gold.
Maybe player should finally have some use of his personal money? Lower prices on all items - player can spend crews money only on ship, trade, salaries and crew equipment*, but his personal equipment is his problem.

*which also would require different items. Maybe additional feature in blacksmith - purchashing weapons in dozens just like we're installing cannons

No one has mentioned more options to modify ships that I know of.
If you want to take a ship and add cargo space, that is already possible by getting another ship. The fluyt of war has more guns and crew than a standard fluyt. Same with the pinnace of war. The fast galleon comes in two versions. Cargo and warship. So does the English fast galleon.
Then there are ships that are good warships and cargo ships. The Spiegelretourschip is one. The Wicked Wench is another.

Personally, I get a fat cargo ship and escort it with a warship.

I like your ideas about using player money.

Exactly - another ship. Im talking about changing MY ship. Full customable setting is maybe not that good idea but it would be great to have some possible chnages. Mentioned fluyt comes in two versions but possibility of changing the same ships types between war-like or merchant-like would be handy.
Exampled fluyt -> change ship type -> war / standard / merchant.

Some ships are typical merchant ships, some are war, but few types could be more customable.
(I also noticed that corvette has 2 guns less than light frigate and some small ships can have bigger calibers, even thou Its only a matter of repaint)

I reckon more in-depth ship upgrading could really make your ship feel more unique and personalised. :yes
After all, once you find one you like, it's yours to do with as you please, right?
I'm sure stats configuration between merchant and warship class ships would be possible, too.

This is clearly something that would require a lot of thought, time and coding knowledge to achieve, so if more people think it's worthwhile, I'll add it to our 'Ideas for the Future' list for future reference.
The reason for that is, we don't want to start any more big projects before the release of Beta 2, but we really want to review and fix what we already have.
But I do think this is something worth considering later on... :dance

If all versions of ships are in the same class, that might work. Modding a ship into a different class might cause problems. Let's see what others think.

Actually, we don't want to start any big new things before Build 14 is finished and that might be a while...

I noticed, that theese changes in simple repaint go further.
As far as I understood Ships_init changing light frigate to frigata latina will result not only in cosmetic change of two masts but upwind performance and manouverability will actually increase. With my frigata latina I can tack with decent speed at angle that with square rigged frigate result in drifting.

So what Im saying is: ships customing is already there. But you should add more description of this models so player could know what to expect. Still mentioned before changes would be great.
All you need to do from modding view is mentioned description, more diversity at cannons size and number, crew and cargo capacityand of course payment. I just changed two masts rigging for free o_O and it took no time.

Its too bad there are no other colors ;) blue doesnt fit my 'Vibeke' ;)

Have you seen the Repaint interface for the Shipyard? There's descriptions there for the ships we've got,
but we don't really know what to fill in there. You'd be welcome to help. :yes

Good point. Before the Interface Screenshots mod, it was impossible to tell which ship you were repainting to without a description.
With that mod now in place, the descriptions are redundant, but we should still try to use them for something informative, in my opinion.
But what would be best to use? Most ships you repaint to have the same stats, so mentioning stats would be pointless except for a select few.
Or perhaps those select few should have unique descriptions informing the player of stats changes? :shrug
Going a step further, maybe we could make these instances, where stats change, special cases, whereby you have to pay for the changes, and more time passes before completion.
Mentioning that, does repainting actually take time in-game? :?

Then perhaps we could make it take a short amount of time to do, while still being free (for trial-and-error's sake)? :shrug

Im flattered, but I'm like a child in fog here, I'd be more problem than help. I tried to look for theese ship descriptions and couldnt find them.
I couldn't even find where this gal is used (maybe after SuperDurnius will post ship creation tutorial Ill make myself some washtub from parts of other ships)
But I think it should be something simple. Like:
War Galleon A - reinforced hull, more crew and guns
War Galleon B - reinforced hull, more crew and guns
Merchant Galleon A - lesser crew and guns
Merchant Galleon B - lesser crew and guns
Where A and B means its just different painting ofcourse ;)

P.S.
Are you aware of ship berthing exploit?
When you berth full upgraded ship all his upgrades dissapear but increased stats stay. So you can make your 100-gun man-o-war fastest and most agile ship in the world

Now I know how that works :facepalm
Should I write some descriptions for Christmas ship pack? Im asking becuase there are pictures and stats itself dont change ;)

If you can come up with something useful for any descriptions, you'd be welcome to add them.
No doubt any good work will make its way into the next patch. :onya

Indeed. The descriptions are in RESOURCE\INI\TEXTS\ENGLISH\ShipModels_descriptions.txt if you want to do anything with them.

I did see the ship berthing exploit bug, but am not sure when we might be able to find someone to fix it.
At the moment I'm too busy to have a proper look on the bug tracker, but I will in a few months when I'm back home.

If you can come up with something useful [...]
That part is hard :D
but Im on it.
Purpose of this post: I noticed there is no model choice when repainting some of ships, thus no descriptions would be aviable. This mostly applies unique ships, like Endavour, Greyhound, Bounty and other (an good ol' Dinghy), but since they CAN be encountered / bought maybe it should be covered just in case for any ship?
Im shooting in the dark, but I noticed one thing common to all theese exaples: lack of refShip.Model line in ships_init.

Of course it's hard to decide what the descriptions should have; that's why you can discuss it here. :onya

And well spotted; the refShip.Model line is what dictates which ships can be repainted, and exactly which ones they are 'grouped' with. :yes
But speaking of Endeavour, I seem to recall matching that one up with the Dauntless recently (due to their new models being almost exactly identical, just with a difference of 6 cannons).
That was done in the Christmas Ship Pack (I think... can anyone confirm otherwise? :? ).
