Smugglin-why do patrols always show up?

Monolito

Landlubber
I've recently decided to do a bit of smuggling-who would care bout "profit" from legal trades (yeh, that 2 g per unit of a good is real money :/). I talked to a gu in the tavern on Willemstad. I went to met him on Cape Calvinist. sold my goods. After that a patrol appeared and they ALWAYS show up when I try to sell stuff to smugglers. How do I avoid getting caught by patrols? I can kill the guys on land but then it's "hello!" from the cannons of the ship moored at the shore :( My char is a total noob, lv2. I want to make serious money and have un, not "taxi" all those noobs from taverns :( Any suggestions?

Unfortunately there is no way to get pass the authorities I have tried many times, I think the patrol leader is super man and can hear you doing shady crap a mile away ;) lol

You need to try and get to a higher level so you can handle the ships that are moored there.

Good Luck and happy smuggling ;)

once out of about 10 smuggles i expected a patrol after selling about 3000 slaves and none came.

anyway if ure having trouble early game the best i think is to capture small ships and sell them/their cargo.

get a ship that holds at least 80-100 crew, overload it as much as possible with more crew and enough weapons and youll take over some small traders. I have 9 cannons on my ship for one broadside on the right. the rest i dumped for space. dont forget a officer or 2 to crew the new ships.

Unfortunately I cant afford officers and bigger ships. I'm still doin freight/escort missions for cash. Trade routes ain't too profitable :(

As far as I know this depends on luck AND stealth stats.
And this has logic in this - you cannot expect a greenhorn to start making huge money by smuggling and remain unpunished.

Monolito - the trading missions are EXTREMELY profitable. That's why the treasurers exist. This should be your top priority. Once you can get a lugger of sloop your money troubles are non-existant.

i dont get it don't you start with a lugger? what did you start with a rowboat? yarr!

trading missions profit depends on how much your ships can hold combined... more ships, larger holds, means more profitts. meanwhile, you're only really raising your trading skill. i think pirating is better since you are building many skills at the same time. Raising authority lowers monthly crew/officer payments btw.

By default Diego Espinosa starts with war tartana.

hehe guys u are realy funny xD: listen carefully hendel is right it does depend of your stealth and luck so 2 make it easy 4 u ill give u 2 hints and spare u reading entire forum.

1. stealth - take as large ship as possible and come in sight range of enemy fort then when detected quickly go out of site range
In start stealth will jump insane but if u want stealth 100 u will have 2 grow a pirate beard while doing it :) anyway it pays
2. gold :) - ah yes the cursed gold ) i was thinking about making a tread 4 this since i saw many newbs got gold problems.
....so i started as peter blood and had that frigate ... beside i had many minuses on skills i filled that frigate with greenhorns
and head 4 the sea.. at start best join the battles of other nations or pirates ofc aim 4 the man of war that can be sold mostly 4
about 500 000 . first few fights might be a problem so u realy need big patience 4 reloading mass of times cause your crew is totaly
out numbered . 1 enemy soldier got health points as 20 sailors so it will be very nice that u alrdy have critical and expert fencing
skill , witch i honestly did not have when i boarded my first mow. i had only critical and iron will 2 reload millions of times:)
ofc u can get lucky and do it in 1 try sometimes. but in most cases this is the strategy i used. On larger ships u got a kinda
circular but tight stairs on witch u can BUGG the stupid bots so they come 1by1. so u must block there lighter atack and take dmg from
heavier attacks cause u must STAND YOUR GROUND or they get u surrounded and raped fast. so beside standing ur ground u must pushh the
bots forward and somehow push them off the stairs before they push u and rape u.

Note: the guys who made this game kinda made sure that if u go rambo sh*t too often u fail so u will realy need some endless patience and skill ofc anyway result is sick cash in early game. and many other skills progress fast if u are playing rambo style .

But actualy on the long runs u really dont need gold 4 anything atleast not in that amount.

first few weeks i played i just did rambo style boardings and made who knows how many milions since i filled all french money lenders with max pirate loot after a month of playing .

Altho not that easy this is surely the fastest way 2 get so much gold that every time u see a beggar u give him 100 000 cause he wont exept more ( when i offer him 20 milion he say : are u sick or drunk i wont take it something stinks here :p)

Well actually there is 1 way that makes more gold than this but is even more difficult

im sure u all know about the gold fleet rumors well ill tell u something ... u dont even need a gold fleet rumor ... i found out that almost every if not than every 2nd big ship armada have gold in there hold. so just get on map when exiting a port and save and attack only the biggest ships on map.. if u want 2 make it easier put on a friendly flag of the nation u attack. move close to the last ship (most payeble board mow first)
ofc u need 2 take the wind in count so it will be easy 4 u 2 board other ships after boarding the first .

i do all my jobs with 1 fully upgraded soleil but if u have more ships they will easily get sunk cause gold fleets are packed with firepower. so on start just get the cheapest 500 gold ship that is hard 2 hit . u board a mow ship and go rambo 14 men vs 700+ on mow:) what is good is that bots are stupid on low lvls and wont shoot u too often:)
(that is the part when u can brake ur pc cause sometimes it can happen that u manage 2 kill 28 soliders (each hp as 20 men) and the last one shoots u like a dog)
those fights can last up to 30 or even 40 mins with out expert fencing and huge luck of not gettting shot xD
the real problem starts when u board mows that have rifle men . 40 mins of battle and then a guy put u down with 1 shot over the whole goddamn deck) man that will upgrade ur tollerance skill in real life xD

in any case u will have 2 do some reloading here 2 and make some smart saves.

result is :) from 2-5 MILLION GOLD PER JOB

i guess this concludes all the gold questions :)

hey horror if boarding is such a problem in beginning and you reload/reload/reload why not use a full salute of buckshot before boarding? the arabella holds almost 400 crew without going red so youll have like 500 on it even if they're total noob fighters that many men plus a nice broadside always spelled doom for any MOW i've encountered.

and really are you taking 14 men vs 700?! thats an excercise in frustration id never attempt.

what difficulty are you playing?

Horror-> ur post is a bit hard to understand. Which difficulty u playin? I'm on Captain and don't feel like going higher.

Handel->which trade missions u mean?-those u get from store owners or u simply buy cargo in one towna and sell in the other?

BTW Can I raise my PIRATES skills during the game? Some of my skills (f.e. authority) are a bit low and I wouldn't like to cheat to get em higher.

Bit off topic->whaat's wrong with this forum?! When I try to post I get an error message which says some key doesn't match :/

Buy cargo and sell it. Look for green prices and sell to blue prices. Although sometimes the green prices are higher then the blue prices...
As for the stats - you can raise 1 stat with 1 points and that's all.

Mobucks - the problem early in the game is you can not hit your own nose because of the bad skills. And 14 vs 400 don't work simply because you will not be able to catch the enemy ship except by chance due to the stupid AI.

As for the forum - sometiems ago someone decided to make it better... and my grandma always said "The best way to to spoil something good is to try to make it better.

If I recruit an officer with high authority will it let me recruit more officers than I normally can using my own authority?

I've found the import/export thingy of very little use, as you say the prices often aren't better than what you can get elsewhere. I always compare the actual numbers and ask for news every time I speak to a shopkeeper to keep my price chart up to date.

I've just used the debugger window. It tempted me a lot :0 Useful thing-it adds some nice features. Bad thing-it messed up my game and I couldn't move my char. Good thing-I've copied my saves and engine file. Now it's all OK. Another good thing-debugger forces ya to start a new game and I don't wanna do that :D It's way more entertaining this way. Is there an editor to edit my char's capabilities in the currecnt game, without being forced to start a new game? I'd love to boost Diego's Authority (3 atm). I didin't use any mods such as the smuggler mod coz that makes the game too easy.

I'd like to also know a bit bout Rat God totems. Where do I get one of em? I've read on forum u can get it from treasures. Some people say a "girl" in a brothel can tell me, others say the totem can be found during a quest. Any suggestions?

the easiest way to obtain a rat got figure is to finish a quest given by one of pearl divers leaders , something about Sharps informer that u find around midnight at san juan del norte beach i think,

Did anybody here cheat their stats f.e. by editing the RPG file? Or do ya guys play honest? :>

And why the hell you need to cheat? You need talent to be put to 10 and that's all. All the other stats doesn't really matter. What they provide is faster advance of the skills... which advance faster enough without any cheats...

As for the autority stat - only your authority matters. But you will need not more then 7 officers - which means 4 authority. Providing you can increse it with 1 point you can put it at the min (3). As a matter of fact the only stat which are worth increasing so later in the game (this is the end of Ascold quest and you will be probably 40+ lvl) are authority from 3 to 4 or REACTION for energy.

BTW - it seems you can use more officers then the autority allows if they are NPC captains or quest officers. And I mean "use" - not just hire and keep them as passengers.

Any ideas on how can I raise my Talent? File editting or sumthin? Gess I need to start a new game and set Talen higher.

You need (40-talent) skill advance points to gain 1 perk. If you left your talent at min (3) you need 37 points; there are 20 perconal skills so the max skill advancement points you need is 20x37=740. The max points are 7x100=700 and you have some starting points so the max points actually are about 660. Which means 33 available skill points per perk... which means 7 is the min talent you must have if you want to take all personal perks (it is impossible to get all the ships perks because they are much more).

As for the editing there was explained how to do this - look in the topic about cheats I guess.
