Discussion Story thread

Sailor Apprentice
Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and I was searching for some cool stories that happend to people while playing the game but couldn't find them easily.

So I'm creating this thread to post all of them here if you guys want to.
I love roleplaying in an open game like this so I think it would be interesting to se how others are doing too.

I'm going to start by showing a log that one of my crew members wrote. I'm playing as Beatrice Devlin in the Golden Age of Piracy.

Day 264
We are still searching for that treasure in Hispaniola. It's supposed to be in some cave close to a beach. Devlin bought a map from some
drunk man in a tavern so I don't really know where this is going to take us.
While sailing near Santiago, we were approached by a French scratch patrol. They had a 1st rate ship of the line, a couple of Spanish galleons and a 3rd rate.
We weren't able to see them because there was a lot of fog and they got very close to us.
The captain ordered Ramirez to sail away as fast as he could because his Heavy East Indiaman wouldn't be able to survive this.
We would distract them while he escapes.
Our ship was strong but not strong enough for that.

As their ships were getting closer, out of the dense fog, we started to get in position for a full broadside on the 1st rate. I loaded the chain shot as fast as I could, my hands were shaking. We all fired at their mast and we were able to break it down and slow them quite a bit.
They fired at Ramirez causing great damage and igniting fire aboard his ship. I could see his men jumping into the water while others were burning alive, at that moment I thought this was the day we would meet our creator.

The galleons were firing devastating rounds at us. Our ship wouldn't be able to stand that kind of damage much longer. The 1st rate started to get in position for a broadside while the 3rd rate was approaching our starboard side. I went down to the second gun deck and couldn't see them but after a moment of silence their canons brought death upon our ship. Those 32 pounders went through it like butter. We were dying, some lost legs, arms or were cut in half by those canons and we were starting to get a lot of water in the cargo hold.

Our captain took a risky decision, we were going to board the 3rd rate. It was very close to us and we were able to throw the grappling hooks at them. Moments before the boarding they fired all their canons at us. Our ship was sinking very fast and the fires were uncontrolable.
After a very bloody battle we captured their ship and captain Devlin killed their captain.
Every single one of us starded running to get on the captured ship, many weren't able to get out of the cargo hold and second gun deck.

After all that we were still too slow so she ordered us to throw away canon balls, chainshots, everything. We were still slow and we started throwing all the rum and the food overboard. They tried to break our sails and our mast but we managed to get far from them.

We escaped our death and I now we are saling back to Port Royale. I lost many friends today and what I've seen will haunt me for the rest of my life. I don't think any treasure is worth that.

I hope you guys like the idea and post your stories here!
Cheers :)

I wonder.... If they're well written with some screenshots, maybe we can post them to some promotional profiles of ours (ModDB/Facebook).

You can post them if you think they're good, I'll take some screenshots for the next one. (Maybe I can make a story for the screenshots I posted in the screenshot thread (the latest ones)

I have only just registered, but I have been playing this game for a while now, I think I have plenty of stories. Lemme share one:

In one of my games I was playing as a British Post-Captain in 1797. I was in command of a 32 gun frigate and patrolling the coast of Hispaniola. Since I was a British vessel, I was flying the Portugese colours to avoid being detected. Around noon, I spotted a Dutch convoy dead ahead. It consisted of a fast merchantman escorted by two schooners a brig sloop. I was a tad outgunned, but confident I could take it. I set all sail and went in for a surprise attack. I had the weather gauge so the conditions were perfect.

Once the merchantman was sailing almost next to me, I dropped the facade and hoisted the union colours. It was then that the AI did something I had never seen before: they ran. The escorts vessels all turned around. catched the wind and sailed away. The merchant vessel received a full broadside up close before they too turned and tried to get away. I pounded his sails and rigging with grapeshot and was soon able to easily overtake him. After a few more broadsides, the captain had enough and stroke his colours, likely dishearted by the escort vessel abandoning him (like I said, this was the most curious thing I ever saw the AI do. Actually felt very realistic since I was a much bigger and faster vessel).

Turned out this ship was absolutely loaded with gold. Bingo. I assigned my lieutenant to take temporary command of her. We brought her into Kingston and sold the gold for a whooping 1 500 000 gold and the ship itself for about 50 000. Not a bad day that was.

Interesting story and great loot at the end!

The AI sometimes does this, they try to run and sometimes (I don't know if on purpose or random) the all run in a different directions so you have to choose who are you going to go after.

There is indeed code in place to make ships run away from bigger and scarier enemies.

I suspect the reason for them running in different directions is probably that they maintain whatever heading they had when they received the run away task.
