The perfect pirate game

JollyRogue

Sailor Apprentice
Pirates! had the open and free gameplay, Sea Dogs the graphics, PotC the adventure (just as captain blood will have) and Cutthroats the strategy and the 'manager' qualities (today's managers are pirates right..?)
What should the perfect pirate game have as it's main quality?

Adventure! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/duel_pa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ixi" border="0" alt="duel_pa.gif" />

All of them, of course, but `open-endedness` is the most important. I don't like to have my hands tied behind my back when it comes to making choices...

<!--`QuoteBegin-Fred_Bob`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Fred_Bob)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Adventure!  :ixi
even if the best way for your adventure is a linear gameplay with not too many ships, islands and sidequests?
I agree with wolfy

Sea battles! The smell of gunpowder mingling with neat rum. The tinge of fear soiling the air as a pirate hunting frigate rounds the headland. Cut the cables! Then thrash out to sea in a mad, drunken rage of spray hammering away with your popguns as huge bow chasers plough the sea into confusion around you. Ooooh and sword fights on a crowded deck, thats never really been done to my satisfaction.

that would be graphics or adventure <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> ?

LOL, errrrrrrr...... i think i voted for open ended gameplay. I was suddenly carried away by a vision of naked, rum soaked, syphilitic pirates brutally careering about the caribbean and got a little carried away. My solicitor has advised me to issue a full and comprehensive apology to the originator of this thread JollyRogue. I hold no responsibility for any psychological damage this may have caused. I do however reserve the right to future outbursts of wild prose.

I'm greedy, I want it all... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I think one of the things I enjoy the most about the old PC (and NES) game <i>Uncharted Waters</i> is how incredibly <b><i>deep</i></b> it is for such a simple little game. I could get absorbed into the game for hours and days and weeks and... Heck, I still play it. And it <b><i>IS</i></b> pretty simple, not much to it... But there was a lot to explore and you could pretty much do what you wanted... `Open-ended` games ROCK!!!

I enjoy the adventure, sure, but I also like strategy and management too. I guess I'm a bit more on the cerebral end of things when it comes to games - I like puzzles and strategy more than `shoot-em`-ups.

This is not to say that I will thumb my nose at `shoot-em`-ups (or `one-on`-one battles), but I do prefer strategy to blood and guts. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-the` reverend+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(the reverend)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->sword fights on a crowded deck, thats never really been done to my satisfaction.
Wait 'till you see the new Pirates! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> That aspect is really fun and to my mind, quite artfully done... I enjoy it much more than I expected to!

I know, it's fantastic <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> ! Especially Hose's kid did an awesome job on it!

and for the already made my mind up thing.. Im just being the objective conversation leader <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I'd say open game play with the grapics of POTC. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" />

All of the above, but of course toggleable! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I'd just say gameplay. Cause no game will suceed without good gameplay. And that's where most other pirate games fail, and that's where Pirates! suceed.

Personally, I want it all! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I want the Sea Battles from PotC, the fun factor of Pirates! and open ended gameplay!

Personally, Pirating never really thrilled me, but I always wanted to fly as an officer of the English Navy - Horatio Hornblower fan here! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Returning to port after completing a mission and getting the newest dispatches while seeing if your efforts to stop the Spanish blockade were successful in the overall picture... etc. I wish! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

So... Yeah! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I want it all, because I'm greedy. But most of all I want open ended gameplay, I do like doing quests, but I like the idea of just sailing out of port and doing my own thing, and it still being beneficial to me, e.g. plundering ships, money, and goods.

Personally, over the great graphics and above all, I would prefer to have actual very real naval combat tactics. Sure it is fun to just be able to shoot the guns and sail around, but I'd like for once to have my ennemies form into a line of battle, try to obtain or maintain wind advantage for mobility, try to break up my combat line, try to surround me, rip my sails to slow me down and grape me down to make boardings easier. Quite frankly, most games are lacking in this department. Also respecting national tactics wouls be great. It is known fact that the brits used to fire below the waterline to sink their ennemies, the french aimed for the sails to slow the ennemy down and so on. Also having musket volleys from shipboard, marines on board vessels of the line etc.

But then <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> I'm probably asking too much as pirate games are meant to be at least a little cartoonish with all the clichés. I guess what I am asking for is a simulator, not a regular pirate game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I voted, as all can guess, advanced strategy modes.

Le Diable, did ye like `AOS2-Privateer`'s Bounty at all, matey? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> Open ended and free gameplay of course
<span style='`font-size`:25pt;`line-height`:100%'>I concur wholeheartedly. We already have the great graphics from Akella. I cannot imagine better. Now we need them to come out with the very real naval combat tactics. I believe we have many of the necessary ingredients already in the sim. The opposing fleets often hold to their lines of battle. Imagine breaking that line of battle with port and starboard broadsides sowing confusion into the superior battle fleet. This sometimes happened in the battles of several centuries ago. I believe Akella better than anyone could accomplish this. They have the skill and the graphics engine to bring it about. Hopefully Age of Pirates will come close. A naval classic following could be right up Akella's sleeve.</span>

When i was a kid and played Pirates! on amiga, i always dreamed that somebody would make a game where u can open ur own pirate city after u've made some plunder and stuff as a pirate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
