another nagging colony thing:

You get the message: Under attack, fort will hold 30 days. 4 days later the colony isn't in your list anymore and the bartender tells you some other nation got a hold of it. Raced it or some shit. And sometime I get to my poor poor colony, and fights of the attackers (one ship). I visit my town and everything is fine. few days later the news reached the tavern: My colony got raced. I look at my colonies screen; 322 people left. 2 days ago it was 2344 and no money. THATS pisses me off.

Then there is all these wrong rumors. "Spain repelled the French attack on Nevis" Nevis was never Spanish?? And the best of them all; "The British raced the British colony of ST Kitts"

So my Tip&Trick: NEVER start the main story or conquer colonies. The game goes down the drain from that point.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> You hit the nail right on the head!
I'm waiting for Cyberops to do his thing and won't even look
at this 'Game"! It's a total disaster! I cant even see what people
see in it and playing it? On top of all that, they put up with Starforce,
waiting for patches which don't work! It's the biggest conjob out there
in Pc-land. There is no Story and it took me about 5 minutes to finish it!
Enough of this rant,made me feel a little better! Happy pirating! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Um... isn't copper plating supposed to actually <i>increase</i> the speed of the ship? At least, that's how it worked in real life - for example when <i>HMS Victory</i> had her hull sheathed with copper sheeting it <i>improved</i> her speed.

So, if in AoP copper sheating decreases speed... well, that's not realistic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> And I'm not sure whether it would actually protect the ship against damage <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Hi there <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I think your information about HMS victory is rather flawed, as a member of the HMS Victory preservation society, we re-inact and volutnteer as guides etc for special occasions.

Copper plating does indead add protection to the most vulnerable section onf the hull in 2 ways. The underwaterline section of the hull isn't as strong as the sides as it isn't the main load bearer for the hull structure that being the vertical ribbs and skin structure. Normally solid oak timbers Victory's varies in thickness but is about about 2 foot at he waterline which as that is where the third gun deck houses it's big 32lb guns it has to be the strongest part of the hull. Below the water line to the keel diminishes to under 1 foot and therfore any ship is very vulnerable when she heals after firing. Hence the plating. It improves the damage resitance by approx 15 - 20% depending on the ordenace being used. Copper plating didn't improve that much to the damage resistance directly. It was fitted to help prevent ship worm infesting and weakening the hull.

The resaon Victory was faster after that particular refir was the rigging and mast changes. Not only did she recieve finer materialed sails which caught more wind, her spars were enlaged by 10 % meaning more canvas area hence more speed due to increased efficiency sails and increased surface area approximately an extra 500sqft. The masts and spars were also thickened to all extra bracing and higher wind loadings so the maximum amount of sail could be used longer. However it was very rare for full sail to be used in combat as the lower sails really restricted vision for the command crew.

So to answer your questions : in real life copper plating did increase the durability of the hull below the water line 1 as another barrier but mostly by stopping ship worm, it did slow down the ship more mass added = more drag and inertia. <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->NO COPPER PLATING ISN'T used to increase a ships speed<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->.It was never fitted to ships that required speed only ships for fleet or line engagements. The whole therory was that frigates and corvettes used their speed to tackle the bigger ships and damage thier sails and rigging and if possible destroy theor rudders so the bigger ships could then close and finish them off or board them.

In sailing vessels there are only 3 ways to do speed them up. 1 Increase rigging or sail surface area / quality, 2 reduce your overall mass / inertia 3 redsign the hull to produce less drag or if not possible keep it as clean as possible below the water line. Or travel through time and fit a dirt great engine and some nice props <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Any how enough of the history and physics lessons just enjoy the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

srew that go into the folder and make all the ship speeds and cargo loads higher and JUST IGNORE the main quest ...try to survive being a trader or a Pirate...the main quest is the WORSE part of the game.

Now imagine that .

I would not have put this out for a game boy .

I am sorry to have to insult game boy.

aahahhhaaa Hilarious! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Here's a trick I found:

1. Raise tactics skill to 8 or more
2. Buy/ aquire 3 or more more ships
3. If you really don't want to run into enemy fleets (on a trading mission and really can't be bothered) then whenever they intercept you on the travel map you can "sail to" the ship at the back of your fleet and be out of reach and go back to world map.
4. Sail away poking tongue at pushy fleets. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

What is the "tactics" skill? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Tactics: like navigation, luck and cannons etc
allows you to have more ships in your fleet. if you need more exp just rename your ship "ExpBooster".

this is not a hint. it'a a CHEAT!!!

Yes i know but thats not the actual point I was trying to make. The point I was trying to make was in my previous post. I would never promote cheating... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I really don't care if you get the exp without cheating or not. If you've played the latter stages of the game though, you'll surely agree that the level up rate become stupidly slow after level 15 -20.

You can gain a very good price for the goods you want to sell in the harbour...just talk with a local ship there and the price are biger then in the store...the same solution when play like a pirate ...when you are in open sea and see a pirate convoi just press F3 and then talk with these ships and sell the goods...the price are very good.

To be honest guys i cannot see anything wrong with this game, i have not come across any bugs in the game, yeah it crashes occasional but that is very obsessional, like after about 3 to 4 hours of game play. It would be good if their was a map included in the manual or with the manual, i doownladed this game in replace of sea dogs which i have been having some trouble getting to work with windows 7. If you take your time over this game and dont rush through it like a bull in a china shop, it is a very good game yeah the stroy is total sh*t, and it takes the piss sometimes but every time i play it i rank up or learn something. I think that it needs improvement but overall it is good game. That is coming from a ex game reveiwer for gamer magazine.

Principly i love this game in every way, just the very looooong time that it needs to travel from one end of the world to the other is making me enjoying more the sequel CoAS which doesn´t have that problem. Is there a way or trick to shorten traveltime on water?

No it doesn´t Pieter that´s the point. In CoAS they were changing that. Maybe because they also got fed up with that by the time ;)
R-key doesn´t change something with my keyboard but thanks anyway :(
