224 years ago, in 1581, Francis Drake completed his circumnavigation. I wrote it here, because it´s not in the Today in History section of the homepage - which I find rather odd.

Ye meant 424 years, didn't ye matey? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" /> I did, indeed.

Ah, we need to add that date, good one, Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I compiled a lot of those dates in the Pirate History section - gleaning dates of birth or death, mostly. Perhaps we need to ask again about more dates, as there appear to be a few more (and indeed different!) historians here now. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Made this topic a "Sticky", hopefully we'll compile some more dates for our calendar now...

<span style='`font-size`:25pt;`line-height`:100%'><span style='color:blue'><b>EVERYBODY, we need important dates in pirate history...</b> </span>

Add 'em here, I'll get them into our calendar. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />

THANKS!</span>

Today in 1654 the First Anglo- Dutch war (`1652-1654`) was ended by the Treaty of Westminster. This war was the first in history to be entirely fought at sea.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Excellent! We need more entries like this! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Nothing really piracy- related today, but today Capetown was founded. Or rather, today in 1652 the Dutchman Jan van Riebeek established a supply camp at the Capo of Good Hope that would later develop into Capetown.

Well, that's `nautical-related` - Capetown was a very important supply stop when rounding Good Hope! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Today, in 1713, the War of Spanish Sucession, was ended by the Treaty of Utrecht. The most important naval event of this war was the Battle of Vigo Bay (23rd October 1702), where English and Dutch ships destroyed a Spnish Treasure fleet and captured about one million pounds in silver.

Well, well, over a week since my last update, so, in this post there´s everything that happend from the 12th of April up to today.

12th April 1606: The Union Jack was introduced as the national flag of Great Britain.

13th April 1570: Guy Fawkes is born (not exactly piracy-relevant, but good to know)

17th April 1492: Christofer Columbus signs a contract with the Spanish Crown to sail to Asia for spices. Now this is one very important date, for without him, we wouldn´t be writing here (no Columbus -> no discovery of America -> no pirates -> no forum!)

18th April 1689: George Jeffreys dies. Those who read "Captain Blood" know who he is: The judge over the Monmouth rebels, most of whom were sentenced to death. A lot of the death penalties were changed to "transportation to the colonies", where the convicts were sold as slaves on the plantations.

Today, in 1587, Francis Drake sinks the Spanish fleet in the harbour of Cadiz. I watched a black-and-white movie about it as a kid and can clearly remember that, but I don´t remember the title. If somebody knows it, please tell me.

Grimm, Was it <u>Fire over England</u> ? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028872/" target="_blank">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028872/</a>

I remember they fought the Armada, but I can't recall if Cadiz is in there or not.

Or could it have been <u>Sir Francis Drake</u> which was a television series? (I never saw this one!)

<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055656/" target="_blank">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055656/</a>

To be honest, it could be both ouf it, it´s an awfully long time ago. I just remember one scene where fireships go into Cadiz and destroy the fleet anchored there, and another, showing the two fleets sailing up to each other, the English ships rocking on the waves and the Spanish heavier ones just cutting through the sea. It was pretty impressive to a ten-or-so year old <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Today, 505 years ago, the Portuguese Pedrp Alvares Cabral was the firs European to take a glimpse at the coast of Brazil. 29 years later, the eastern hemisphere was divided along 17° east of the Moluccas between Spain and Portugal in the Treaty of Saragossa.

These are great, Grimm, keep it up! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I will, so here´s today:

1564: William Shakespeae is born (let´s do something for our comon education)

And, more seafaring related, in 1598 Marten Tromp, one of the Dutch sea heros (along with Michiel de Ruyter and Witte de Witt) of the Dutch- Anglo Wars was born.

Well, an eventfull day, this 25th of April, here we go:

1599: Oliver Cromwell is born
1607: A Dutch fleet destroys the anchored Spanish fleet at Gibraltar.
1719: Robinson Crusoe is published

You are a veritable fountain of knowledge, Grimm! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Perhaps you could compile a list of the most important things throughout the year and give them to Keith for inclusion in the calendar. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

THANK YOU! It is with help like yours that this website gets better and better! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> OK, time to confess: I don´t know it myself, I just visit the wikipedia daily and scout the date section. `Tis the plank for me, right? (I just realize, we´d need a smilie for that...)

Aw, I knew you were getting it from somewhere; no matter, it's the info that counts!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

No plank for you, methinks... But yes, I could probably make up a smiley for that... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
