I can´t say how reliefed I am.

A slow history day, this one, at least as far as it´s pirates - or sailing related:

In 1607 English settlers land at Cape Henry, Virginia. These would later move to James river and found Jamestown there.

It's keelhauling or flogging for punishments anyhow; I think it's been established that "walking the plank" is just a novelist's invention and wasn't anything the REAL pirates did... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I know. Or at least, it´s not in the books, but then again, not every ship had its onboard historan, so we´ll never know.

However, this day´s slow as well, it´s just Ferdinand Mangellan who got himself killed in the Battle of Mactan by natives in Phillipines in 1521.

Today, in 1672, French troops invaded the Netherlands. This invasion was part of the Third Dutch- Anglo War, in which England had allied with France against the Dutch.

Grimm, I thank you for the news of all these interesting happenings throughout history! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I´ll try and keep it up, but I can´t promise anything. The day after tomorrow it´s back to Germany, leaving behind 24/7 wlan connection all over the house and my favourite working couch here <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ib012.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cry" border="0" alt="ib012.gif" /> and it´s back down to a few hours at university computers. I´ve got to find me a job real quick, so I can afford a good connection at home <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":|" border="0" alt="mellow.gif" />

Where did I find what? The anniversaries? Wikipedia.org, I thought I mentioned that already.

Well, today, in 1493, Pope Alexander VI divided the world between Spain and Portugal along the Demarcation Line in the Treaty of Tordesillas, and one year later Cristofer Columbus landed in Jamaica.

In 1626, the Dutch explorer Peter Minuit arrived in the New Netherlands, today Manhattan.

So, the last update done in Brussels, in two hours time I´ll sit in the train (for almost eight hours...)

In 1640 King Charles I disbands the Parliament and thus starts the Civil War
In 1646 the same King Charles I surrenders to the Scottish Presbyterian Army at Newark.

In 1821 Napoleon Bonaparte dies.

On August 23, 1305 William Wallace was executed in London.

In May of 1718 Blackbeard blockaded Charleston, South Carolina, and plundered around 9 ships.
