Tool for making characters and converting VRML files to gm

Inez Dias

Privateer
Storm Modder
Just finished a new version of my modding tool (formerly known as character tool).
With it you can:
- bind new characters to skeleton so they work in the game.
- convert VRML files to gm format and vice versa (so you can use any Modeler Program that writes VRML – in particular 3D Studio Max - to create POTC models).
- switch heads of models.
- edit locators
- view internals of gm files.

What’s new is that it now also works for ship models (altough with some limitations).
The tool is available at <a href="http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/TOOL/" target="_blank">http://home.arcor.de/swigard/Downloads/TOOL/</a>
(get the file TOOL.rar).

Have fun!

Hi Inez,

I finally was able to download and try out the version you gave me back around August, but it didn't seem to have any new features. How do you switch heads with it, for instance?

I'll give this new one a try. Great work.

Wow, that's great! Thanks, Inez!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> WTG! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Aha, gotcha. This is f'n awesome! I played with it all last night. Found out how to make headless characters; it's great for skeletons. And some of them seem to only leave the head, a big disembodied noggin' floating around... but trying to use him as my character killed my game. :mad:

I'll post screencaps soon. Anyway, this is an invaluable tool and I hope people use it a lot and share their experiments. Thanks again Inez!

Maybe now we can get some CORRECT hats on the soldiers for the Napoleonic skinpackages from JMV! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

This is awesome, thanks again, Inez!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Here's what I have so far. I'm having a blast.

Only a few of the Towngirl heads will mix fairly well with Danielle.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/newdanielle.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/alsonewdanielle.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Here're the headless skellington and floating head (looks like Patchy lost more than a hand and foot!)

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/headlessskel.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/floatinghead.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Skellingtons are the most fun to play with.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/mrskullhead.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/captainskullhead.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

(With the robed one, maybe I can make the bit sticking up around his neck look like flames...)

This tool might also enable me to finally create a "Le Pact de Lupes" style character...

So, thanks for the third time Inez...

And by the way, is there a way to make it so the short women models can match up with the taller males? I need lady skellingtons.

Sorry, but I'm afraid mixing girls with guys would be rather difficult. Besides size, they have a different bone system also.

Your skellies are great! Never thought of that! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Hi all.

I have a question, I guess for you Inez.

Do I have to have a Modeler Program to be able to use your program to switch heads of potc models?

If so, any suggestions of any that have trial versions?

No, for just switching heads you don't need a modeler program. You'll want GmViewer, however (available here in the downloads section, I think) so you don't have to start the game to view your results.

Well I guess this is just not working for me.

Every time I try I just get this:

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

.... Does this program mean, that someone could put the main charecters head onto a bunch of different bodies, so that the clothes you buy at the tailors would not change you into a different person? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> Maybe with this armor can show up on your charecter?

Another question.

Is the VRMLImExPort.exe file and its related files supposed to be extracted into any specific place on my computer.

Right now they are all in a Bin directory in F:pirates of the Caribbean.

I am getting the same errors as Petros. I want to put Blaze's head on Shkiper's body, with one of the `tri-corner` hats on his head, so that I can skin it into a new character <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Frank_Einstein_: Yes, you can put the main character's head onto different models

Petros:
I think this error must be because the combobox for the models is not properly filled. Does ist show anything at all ?
Probably you didn't point it to the correct game directory. Did it ask you for that ? (You need to have the game installed and the characters modesl in the Resource/Characters sudir).
When the file selection dialog pops up just point it to engine.exe in your game directory.

Where you extract the program to shouldn't matter.

Concerning hats: I wish I knew how to do that.
But if someone could extract a couple of hats in a modeler program we might be able to get them working in different models.

Inez, concerning hats, can't we just switch heads that have more `appropriate-looking` hats? I am not the ones who were working on the Napoleonic era uniforms, but I recall someone lamenting that we couldn't switch heads because a different model had the right hat but not the right body for the uniform. ???

I dunno, just an idle thought. I might look at changing heads on my sneaky trader mod - I wanted to have one with an eyepatch as well as one without... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />: That's future stuff, for now I'm awfully busy with other things.

Thank you again for coming in here to announce your newest version of this valuable tool! We really appreciate it!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Catalina,

Yes, you can just give a character a new head that has the right hat. But that doesn't help if you want to keep the face and only change the hat...

And I have to thank you for the warm welcome in this forum. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />
