Tool for making characters and converting VRML files to gm

Sounds awesome ..

That was broken for the same reason as the dragging around of patch points and should have been fixed along with that: it does work for me now - does it not for you?

How about this for a start:

[attachment=236:attachment]

Made during the game with the (halfinished) building kit. I'll include blank slots for other modder's creations, so that you'll be able to add your tombstones and spooky trees <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Thanks again for the hint about modelsplitting, otherwise I would have never been able to isolate that mansion out of Redmond city.

Inez: Haven't had a chance to get the newest tool yet... I'll let you know.

CCC: Awesome. You can delete that lighthouse right out of that model, too.

Here're some previews of my new towns and locations (another one I will do soon is a sort of ship graveyard, since I can repeat the derelict ship model on that Douwesen beach); these will be the loading screens.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/new_town.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/new_town2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/jungle.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Cool! This is going to be a mod to look seriously forward to! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Great locs, Alan <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Finally the PotC world is not only growing but changing as well <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />

Thanks for the lighthouse model hint. Though I'll use the other way round: isolate the lighthouse so that it can be used as building model. Yet another nice piece of architecture for the building kit <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Here's another I started working on, inspired by the look of the pirate tavern in SMP!

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/ship_pub.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

It's a wrecked ship made into a seaside pub. The interior will be a shipdeck full of tables and chairs and bottles and rowdiness. I am just not sure which island I should put it on.

WOW! COOLCOOLCOOL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />
Are you planning on releasing some of your excellence-in-the-works soon? You really do have some great stuff waiting! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

You bet. It's a lot of odds-and-ends though... like, I may just slap the Curio and wrecked ship pub into the same zip file for now; those're the ones I've gotten the farthest on. Almost done with the interior of the pub above. Still not sure where I should put the pub, any suggestions?

Couple odd things with the modeller tool though... editing a location model does something to the camera, where you can see through walls if you position the camera behind the character. We've known about this from the start and I dunno if there've been suggestions to fix it...

Also, I can edit ptc files, that's been great (though sometimes that results in, like, invisible lines across the floor that I can't walk through, as if some polygonal line or something is blocking the way); but trying to save a locator file that I've edited in 2D mode crashes the program.

Beautiful setting for a seaview pub <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

How about placing your new locs on the new islands? Only if Screwface doesn't mind or has other plans, of course <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Additional, new locations would make the new islands even more attractive, and it might be better if you add new locs to islands which are sort of newly developing instead of disturbing old locs to which people are very accustomed to.

that's what I was planning on doing; I just have to ask him what he's got cooking for the islands and where I can fit it in. It'd be nice to make the ship_pub location an actual landing shore, the way the original Douwesen shore isn't.

Got the inside of the pub all finished, then I started fiddling with something else with the large shipyard model... I'll post pictures after class.

...

OK here's the inside of the pub, made out of the cargo hold shipdeck: <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/ship_pub_inside.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Still working on getting the "sit" locators just right... those pirates just will not sit like gentlemen.
And it needs a name. Suggestions? "The Gunroom"? "The Galley"? "Davey Jones' Locker"? "The Rum of the Ancient Mariner"?

And I've begun turning the large shipyard into sort of a horse stable (it could also be a barn for that cow model we haven't used yet), though I'm having a heckuva time with the patch, those invisible lines across otherwise walkable areas I described before.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/alan_smithee/horsies.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

WOW! Looking very great indeed! I like the name "Davy Jones' Locker". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I second that <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Praise as well as name <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

"Tavern on the Fiddler's Green" might be a good name... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I third it! That looks great Alan! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Are you going to put any of the Voyage Century models in any of the scenes? I keep seeing things like tables with bottles on them and think, "Smithee would do amazing things with this stuff, even Santa Claus." (Santa Claus? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> )

Here's a boo boo I made when I was trying to load one of the swords from VC into POTC.<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/332ZK34H/692384.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<i>"Malcolm told me he hangs out down the street from a giant sword stuck in the ground, now if I could just find that sword I could find him!"</i>

I have had zero luck with the VC models so I gave up for now. The GMViewer and Inez's tool just crash or don't recognize the file when I try and open some of them. And it's a crying shame coz I was most interested in the locations, little castles and things. I haven't noticed any town or interior models though, but I haven't seen them all yet.

Also wanted to work with those animals but I didn't get far with that either.

Gonna make a few more outdoor locations (jungles, beaches) then send them to Screwface for the new islands.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Inez,

I am thinking about getting back into POTC and wanted to check something with you before I start retexturing every single model I like to an alternate version with some resemblance to the character face that I want to play (damn morrowind has completely ruined my ability to enjoy any game without being able to dress my character up in new outfits every second day[not that I ever really played much of morrowind after I opened the construction set and starting modding])...

Anywaaay I thought I would revisit your TOOL in the hopes that character mixing had been perfected, unfortunately my dream of a simple "push this button and everything is just how you want it" feature has yet to be implemented, but I did wonder if you had any further plans for the function(character mixing that is, not the everything one). You know seeing as how you update the TOOL 3 or 4 times a day and all <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" />

It just seems to me that there has to be an easier way than trying to line up textures without guide maps or any logical standardisation(Akella <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> ) in a vein attempt to prevent cross eyes and weird excorcism effects. Well that and the whole 'Chop off his 'ead an stick it on that there body' kind of appeals to the pirate in me Arrrr! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

Not knowing anywhere near enough about the .GM format myself <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> and just taking a logical approach it would seem that if all men share the same animation especially in the case of the talking head anim then they must share bone points so that you could sever a neck at lets say the 3rd vertebra of the body and the 4th of the head then stick the head partially through the body to line up the 3rd in the head with the slice point 3rd of the body sinking the fourth inside the body, add some gaffa tape and what have you then voila head swaps without holes, obviously there would still be hair traces on the body and things like that in a few of the cases but most models would then work out of the box as it were with the push of your magic button. Where as at the moment the chop point for the head seems to be along the jawline which means that unless the characters share the same exact characteristics under the jaw and down to the shoulders they will always end up with holes.

Of course all this is assuming the models have more than one joint for the neck, and from what I have seen they have atleast two, one where the neck begins from the skull(this is where you apear to have made your cut fro both the head and body) and one where the neck ends at the shoulders (where I sugest you make the cut for the head) then it would be a ?simple? matter of merging the model data of the two overlapping parts. If this is not possible then could you add the option to choose to make the incisions at the lower point as I think there might be at least a few more possible combinations that way and its always better to have more options anyway(well almost always[I still have a few hundred mods to try for morrowind, not to mention the finishing touches on a fair few of my own]). <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

At any rate thankyou for the TOOL and all your much apreciated work on POTC <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/love.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":luv" border="0" alt="love.gif" /> and apolagies if I am way off base, which I could very easily be as my modeling experience is pretty much limited to notepad, NWN .mdl's and sooo much trial and error.

I just wanted to be sure before I go spending the next few weeks retexturing vague approximations and once again miss out on playing the game <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Cheers,

Daede.

P.S.
The link below shows a few variations I have done for myself based on the Jack Sparrow <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jack1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j1" border="0" alt="jack1.gif" /> Texture by Kodo Boon. In the second shot of the heads close up you can see very clearly why I would much rather a head chop approach as there is only so much you can do with a texture. Though I must say I really like how the Pirate10 one turned out, though I think I may thin the beard out a bit more and the eyes aren't quite there on any of them yet.

P.P.S.
Seing as this is my first post on the board I wanted to say a big THANKS to y'all who have made this game worth revisiting, so Cat, Lassie, Nathen, Pieter, Petros, Inez, CCC, Alan, et al... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

:moddingdit fixed links (forgot 50megs.com doesn't allow offsite linkage, sorry. Should work now)
:moddingdit added some names to the thankyous that I forgot and no I am not telling who <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
:moddingdit last one I swear, just gave proper credit for the original Jack Sparrow skin... I Hope.

Nice reskins. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Welcome to the forum, Daede <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well, that's modding <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> At least as I practice it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Now I finally understand the implication of that ole Damokles tale!

In school that was all Greek to me..

But oversized models CAN be useful: 30 feet long cannons make a convincing blastfurnace. That is, if you are easily convinced.. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Oh... my...

Well butter my bottom and call me a cookie!

I like what I see here, whee! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> Alan, that is mightily impressive. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Oh, and, eh, Daede, if you by "Lassie" meant me... It's Lass - Lassie just makes me think of the dog, heheh. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> But you are quite welcome - I am happy to have added ever so little to this great, fun project. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Alas, in PotC it takes whole new model with all the settings in the files to "change outfit". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I too wish it was easier to get the character into any outfit you buy - picture going to a ball, dressed up to the hilt (or whatever tickles your fancy), having bought or "borrowed" the outfit, then going down to explore an old mine, putting on rougher clothing - then a visit to the pub to freshen up, and then the captain's outfit for sailing the high seas... Ah well, I can dream!
