Vikings

Bandit Of Barbados

This is a post on vikings, and ONLY viking related Subjects-
These men sailed and raided from Norway, Denmark, scandavia and other islands in Europe. Though they did most raiding on towns I dont believe theres many records of Vikings attacking a vessel, when vikings plundered they took everything that wasn't nailed down- from plates, fruit, clothing, gold, cloths, silverware, mugs everything. I believe I know when a viking died- they placed him in his longship at his feet was his favorite stallion, beside him his dead slaves, his weapons and shield and possessions that they believed would serve him in the paradise of the afterlife. Vikings killed innocent women, men and children while they conducted raids and left plundered towns and corpeses at their trail. They used wooden ships called longships propelled by oars and a large oar to steer the vessel. Here are pictures of Longboats-

These sort of vessels were used by vikings on their long journeys for rape, plunder and death.
Some famous vikings are Leif Erickson, Bagsecg, Gofrid Haraldsson, And Cnut The Great.

Here are some images of vikings-

Well theres most of what I know on vikings. Oh and cant forget Thaggar The Viking Raider xD

images

All of the images are from fantasy sources. (Except possibly the Thaggar one) Vikings didn't wear horned helmets. It's near impossible to find accurate images with a Google search these days.

Actually the horned viking helmets myth was originally introduced by Christians during the era to make Vikings appear more evil than they were, later Italian opera's perpetuated the myth, and unfortunately the image stuck. A proper viking helmet would have looked something a lot more like this :

The burial that you described above was a very rare thing, and usually reserved for a Viking king or chieftain, or very rarely a great warrior. Vikings most certainly attacked ships of the age, cogs and galley's were easy targets for the fast, maneuverable Viking Drakkar's. The latter developments of fore and aft castles on European ships was a direct response to Viking attacks on vulnerable shipping.

I could go on for days, but I really don't have the time, and I would probably bore you. There are so many myths about Vikings that continue to persist, I have refuted many of them on these forums over the years, you can read through one from a couple of years ago HERE! I have many Viking links I can send you if your curious to know the real story.

Hmm very intresting Hylie And Thaggar. I'll admit a few months ago I was very intrested in Vikings though I kept learning about them, watching documentaries, etc. and I found out about Viking Punishments, how they slaughtered women and children, would take their swords and tear their victem's skin, it disgusted me so much I lost intrest. Though I guess I'm intrested in them yet again. :checklist And Thaggar I would apreciate it if you could send me some viking links.

Ah yes, much more proper helmets, nice find Hylie! I am not too impressed with their sword collection though, they sure don't give a very good description of the steel they use or the creative process. That's usually a sure sign of cheap, mass produced stamped blades.

Buck, Viking raids were brutal, there is no doubt about that. They were very good at what they did and they did not discriminate as to who there victims were. But if you take an overall look at the age they were living in, the dark ages were just that, very dark. The Vikings were not the only people to employ such brutality during that age. They were simply better at it. I'm not sure what documentaries you are referring too mate, but if it is something you saw on TV or at the movies, it is most likely pure propaganda. A lot of the time Vikings would take women and children as prisoners and slaves rather than just out right slaughter them.

Here are some good places to start mate, but getting to the truth is not something you will be able to do in a weekend.

And quite possibly my favorite Youtube video of all time, longboats were not just boats, they were works of art!

Depending on the manufacturer one can get everything from modern stainless steel blades to Damascus blades to pewter blades for display only. Most of them are made from the modern equivalent of period metals. I do agree that they generally do not give very good descriptions anymore. They used to give detailed info for all blades.
Here is the first sword I bought there, the cutlass, and another one where they describe what they did.
US Naval Cutlass 1860 500152 - Buy from By The Sword, Inc.
Henry V Sword Type XVIII IP-703-2 - Buy from By The Sword, Inc.

Aye, now those are much better descriptions. I mostly just looked at the Viking swords they had. I came close to buying a hand forged sword I found a few years ago, I just couldn't justify spending that kind of money. I have come real close to buying an Albion sword or two as well, again, I just couldn't justify the expense. I have been doing a lot of research over the years, there are some really good sources of information out there.

http://www.myarmoury.com and http://www.swordforum.com are two of the best I have found.

Those are some expensive swords! That must be why most of them are made in India and China. I have never spent over $300 USD.

What happend to the world, we used to use just swords, pistols, muskets, wooden ships, now we have
torpedoes, nuclear weapons, machineguns, shotguns, rifles, aircraft carriers, submarines, nuclear submarines, etc.

I have seen many documentary's over the years, but I just saw one made for the American PBS program called NOVA: Secrets of the Viking Sword. This is by far the single best documentary about Viking swords that I have ever seen! If you are even the slightest bit interested in how a real sword is made, this one is a must watch!

The show follows the efforts of a modern day blacksmith Richard Furrer to recreate a Viking ULFBERHT sword, at the time it was pinnacle of sword making technology. It also shows just a bit of how far Viking culture and trade spread across the globe. If you live in the US, the show is currently available to watch online on PBS's website HERE!

The show just aired on TV on Wednesday, here is a trailer from PBS's Youtube Channel. I skipped the Neanderthal doc, but the one about Siberian Tiger's is well worth a watch too!

Wow I never knew swords and helmets used and worn by vikings could be so intresting! I've had this viking documentary on my Favorites for a while. Its about a midgeot viking named Ivar The Boneless.

Thaggar I think you would be most intrested by the doc. if you don't have it already! :doff

This is a prime example of the TV propaganda I mentioned earlier. I think I saw part of this one a few years ago, thanks for posting it so I could watch the whole thing, I do remember now why I didn't bother looking for it again. This so called documentary presents an interesting theory, but really provides nothing but pure speculation to back it up. This show was simply about boosting ratings.

I have a few more, but it's been a while since I really looked anything up. I have been a bit distracted with the Golden Age for the past few years. I don't have any more documentaries at the moment, at least not online links, there are a couple that I have been trying to find for years. Anyway. these will provide you with some more good information.
