Storm Modder
Ok, AoP really pulled the Man o War off well, shes a beuty. unlike Sea Dogs and PoTC i find the MoW quite enjoyable here, i just feel great.

I recieved news of the english colony of Nevis was under seige from french forces, so i headed over to check the situation out from a safe distance, the siege fleet consisted of 3 frenchy man o wars, a line ship, and an assortment of pinnace's and galleons.

Well i decided to take a chance and charged in with cannons firing in their midst, the first man o war i attempted to board surrenderd without a fight the others had little resistance. all ships were either sunk, forced to surrendered or ransomed.
The siege of Nevis was over. And it makes me proud <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I'd be look'n te capture one O' those beauties as soon as I get me copy AOP, No ship will be safe with Ol' Skull runn'n amuck on the Caribbean <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I met a little group of 2 Man-o-Wars and 2 other Warships today... I got so exited that i accidently pulled the tirgger on one of the cannons... the result? ... you don't wanna know (I just have a single Corvette on this profile)

But i took a screeny right before that "accident" happened <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

A man-o-war that surrendered without a fight eh? What difficulty are you playing on? I get the crap beat out of me by schooners (playing at the captain difficulty setting). I'm still trying to get used to the swordplay ( I jumped from Sea Dogs to AoP so this game rocks in my opinion.)

im not shure, the 2nd most difficulty, with reduced damage off. the man o wars had very little crew, they were part of a seige squadron against nevis, so i assume the fort had done some damage to them as well

Nothing better then lining up a MoW infront of a little lugger, broadside, then giving them the fastest decomission in the History of the Caribbeans.

yes I found out that most of these siege ships have very litle crew on them :/

For capturing a colony one would suspect that these ships would be full with soldiers for an invation ...

but no , there all empty like hell <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

maybe if you arrived just as the seige begins? i mean the fort may have pounded alot of the crew of the ships to death. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

The problem with sieging fleet is they AND the fort shoot only grapes (due to the 9,999,999,999-th bug), so after a while all the man-o-wars and battleships and such has less crew then a luger and you can easily capture them with so-so ship; besides lacking a crews they lack gunners too and practicaly don't shoot (it takes 4-5 times longer to load their cannons then yours).

Speaking of seige, after near 18 hours of play i sucesfully captured a colony for the english, with a man o war. it was not easy the fort hat 70+ guns and a Ship of the line and two smaller ships defending it.
I did not bother with the sotl, since the fort was the real threat, i hammered in broadside after broadside with bombs, you should have seen the ship when the fort was finally destroyed, riddled with holes like mice trough swiss cheeze and a knocked down mast.
It wasent over there thou, then came the land battle, wich was gruesome i failed 5-6 times until i too my carpenter and used all his spare points and boosted his sword skills up to level 8 and maxed out his fighting abilities and stuck a expensive rapier in his hand. he died but he was enough to turn the tide of battle.

The aftermath was not a pretty sight, my ship heavily damaged, and well over a third of my crew dead, all soldiers dead. but i did it. alltho i only made a 200000 piasters profit rather than the 400000 i had hoped for, i had to put out alot of expenses preparing for the seige and then covering the aftermatch so.

But hey, it shure was fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

later it will be much easier
i somtimes capture forts with single man o war and all what they do is a damage like from medum fights (like 80% of the hull left)
but the iron guns costs about 260000 and the iron plated hull about 60000 so it isnt cheap to improve man o war

My Fleet consists of:

1 Man-O-War (Flagship: The Dawn's Grace)
2 Battleships (Halcyon and Serenity)
2 Lineships (Enterprise and Independance)

Most of the time, I park the MoW right infront of the fort to take all the damage, whilst all the other ships are armed with 24 lbs Culverines and they pound the fortress from far away.

My ships carry a compliment of extra soldiers, musketeers and co, so whenever we lay siege to a colony, it's a breeze.

Having an amazing sword (the golden needle) i cut down soldiers doing 54 melee damage using power attack.

I have 3 fighters with me each equipped with the best guns and swords for their rank.

So I have it fairly easy. Only issue is, whenever my big ships fire their cannon balls, the game slows down to a halt, and it takes the PC (pretty good one too) about 3 minutes to calculate the trajectory of 60 cannon balls in the air at once.

And i noticed, the game crashes everytime after you conquer a colony, when the port screen loads up, UNLESS you log out of the game and back in again, before landing your troops onto a fort.

nice strategy altho i prefer to fight the fort by myself while my little fleet(lagger and brig) is sailing away from the fort
but there was one fort that left my man o war with 37 hull points

btw where do you find all the crew for all this ships its more than 5000 man

easy, sail around from port to port, press crew from an enemy into service(this is most easiest accomplished by blowing away the masts and the hull to near minimal) or steal crew during an escort mission.

Lol.

Its kind of sad but, owning a Man -O- War and having all class 1 ships in your fleet, most ships surrender out-right without you having fired a single shot.

I once asked 3 defending ships near an enemy fort to surrender. They just dropped their cannons and surrendered like I was the Goddess of Pain and Suffering. I assimilated their crew and captured the captains. Sometimes the captains themselves make excellent officers, especially them filthy pirates <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Although... If a particular captain has given me hell in battle, I execute him personally, sadistically whipping him off a plank. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

And yeah, going from town to town collecting crew members is like going shopping.

I usually spread them out amongst my ships equally, i.e. if there are 60 crew for hire, i give each of my ships 10 crews, and my flagship 20.

Crew is not a big issue if you have a fear-inspiring fleet.

Somtimes i'm capable of taking down a fort without even a scratch with tactics, with all my crew intact. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Tho.... Antigua was scary. Very very scary. I lost 3 ships to that forsaken fort, and The Dawn's Grace lost half of it's crew before we finally pounded the fort into a pulp... That fort is like a mile long, with 3 levels of cannon.

Cannons infront, and Culverines at the back... I call those forts "Dread Citadels"

Antigua and Nevis are perhaps 2 of the best defended colonies in the carribeans.

I learned the best tactics VS those forts is to take out the sides first, then use the "sail to" function to Nevis/Antigua port, and duke it out 5 on one. It get's ugly, but that's the whole thrill of it.

The fort at Barbados is just SAD. 4 salvoes and the colony's yours. That "Fort" has a similar layout as the imperial city in Cyrodiil but 100X smaller.
