Wow AWSOME

First off, yes there are more then a fair share of bugs but the game is AWSOME. These bugs will be fixed quickly so put up with them for the great aspects of the game.

First off you can´t not really compair this game with sid´s version of pirates. Sid went the arcade route with the game and even though it is fun it is arcade none the less. This is more of a pirate sim then a pirate game with amazing ship to ship combat.

You are not going to run around and blow everything up in a small ship in this game because even though speed and agility help you just do not have the fire power to sink your enemy. The aiming gets pretty damn frustrating at first but once you get ahold of the concept it is actually fun, i enjoy running around my boat while steering it to get a good shot off. And i love the way that you can aim a little off because you are used to that gun and know a better point to aim at. Just because the rectical is red, it does not mean that is where you should be aiming, you can aim a little high if you are using chain shot and a little more forward if you see the ship is moving fast and you will not only hit it but hit more of your shots. There is an amount of skill involved just in the shooting. The wind effects the fight WAY more then it did in any other pirate game and the sea comes into play as well because your boat rocks and the game takes that rocking into acount.

Now the one big beef I have with this game is the total lack of a tutorial. Jesus i spent an hour trying to figure this crap out and by god shooting at another ship will take someone 20 minutes to figure out. You have to be on deck (have to figure out how to do that) then you have to figure out that the thing in front of you is where you are aiming (only way to figure it out is kinda aim at something in the right spot see it go red and DING light comes on in your head).

But besides the bugs, the lack of tutorail, and some clunkyness, the game is awsome. The ship combat is second to none, the quests are enjoyable and it has a life span that is much longer then sid´s did.

The online play is a ton of fun, unfortunatly right now you can´t find a server up for the life of you and it takes a while before people will join up to the one you are hosting. They really need to get the dedicated server working so some of the fans can host dedicated servers and get this games online eliment rolling. There is nothing more satisfying then using a corvette to blow the masts off a SOL and then sitting in it´s blind spot slowly dwindling the thing down. I could see alot of future for this games multiplay using people to be tacklers (corvettes for example to take down masts and things of that nature) backed up by some SOL style ships to sink the big boys.

All in all I would give this game a 7.5 right now because of the bugs and lack of tutorial but this game could easily be a 9+ if they launched it without them.

Yeah, why they did not wait a little longer and patch the game before release is beyond me. As is the game has a lot of problems, and the reviewers have been giving AoP broadside after broadside. I think 40% is very unfair, but that will be the kiss of death for the average gamer reading the reviews.
Pirate game fans will get it regardless, but I don't know if that will be enough. I just hope the devs put out at least a couple of patches before casting the game adrift... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sad" border="0" alt="icon_sad.gif" />

I've already added my 2 cents worth in the post "bugs AGAIN???" but here I go for a second time. Its a totally UNACCEPTABLE and UNSATISFACTORY state of affairs that developers can, and do, get away with producing half-baked games with zillions of bugs. From what I hear, there's more water coming out of AOP than the titanic.

Consequently I have now decided to never buy games which contain bugs that hamper enjoyment. I appreciate that AOP probably has many good points but its time to start sending a message to developers that this sort of behaviour wont be tolerated by me in future. I might be a one man band, but by voicing my opinion I hope to encourage others to do likewise. If console game developers can produce games that on the whole rarely contain bugs (because patching isnt an option and hence they cant get away with rushing games) then there's no excuse for PC game developers IMHO. Time for PC developers to wake up and smell the coffee.

End of rant.

Usually the only games that get released with a ton of bugs are MMO´s (and that will never stop because of the HUGE scope of those games) and games done by no name developers. AoP dev´s fall in the no name catagory. They have made a few games but they are generally a very small development house with very small budgets that produce lower cost games. Notice the price tag on AoP is not 59 bucks. However i do agree that it is not good to release a game like this and do not think that single player games get away with it like MMO´s do. They got alot of bad reviews and that is going to hurt thier sales ALOT. Unlike mmo´s where so/so reviews at first can actually be ok (mind you that trend is changing, auto assault, dark and light, etc).

Yes, I appreciate the AoP developer is relatively "no name" but...

1. Producing "bugged to the hilt" games will ensure they remain "no name", or as some of us now know them to be "bad name".
2. Having a low budget is no excuse whatsoever. Would you buy a low budget car that has tempramental breaks, or steering that only works some of the time? I wouldnt, thats for sure.
3. As I see it, being successful in the development of any game boils down to basic project management skills in the context of proper control cycle application. AoP developer Akella (or whatever the name of them is) have failed because they do not appear to have planned or budgeted for AoP with any real discipline, and when things went pear shaped, took the lazy option and released the game, bugs and all. Surely, if what they eneded up producing was worth 69 dollars, then spending half as much again fixing up all the bugs would easily have generated the same, if not a greater amount of sales. Would anyone really baulk at a 100 dollar price tag for a game that works correctly? I for one would even pay $200 for a proper AoP game instead of the one actually released. Furthermore, lets not forget the AoP reviews would surely have been much better, enhancing, not tarnishing their reputation. Granted pirate games are not for everyone but I'm sure AoP would have won over a few non-core pirate gamers.
