Now, I know you've heard the old pirate song that goes, "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest, `yo-ho`-ho and a bottle of rum!" Well, I was looking for something to go along with my <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/ftopic3966.php" target="_blank">piratey Santa Claus,</a> and found these interesting tidbits of info:
This song was originally part of some (title unknown) Broadway musical from around 1901. The poem the song was made from is "Derelict" by Young E. Allison. HE was a contemporary of Robert Louis Stevenson, who we all know as the author of "Treasure Island". There was a folk legend about the fate of a crew shipwrecked on Dead Man's Chest reef, off of Tortola in the eastern Caribbean. Allison used the `now-famous` lines from Stevenson's story to retell the folk legend in quite graphic detail.
The words below were originally published in the book "Best Loved Poems Of The American People", edited by Hazel Felleman and published in 1936 by Garden City Publishing:
