Can somebody help me? I've just installed POTC but can't equip weapons.

I'm right at the start of the game and have picked up the cutlass, spyglass, pistol etc.

Malcolm Hatcher has just told me:
"Now you should equip your weapons and spyglass. To do that press the "Open Player Status Screen" key ..."

When I check the controls setup, "Open Player Status Screen" is assigned to f2 but pressing the key has no effect in gameplay.

I wanted to try reassigning the command to another key -but- within the controls setup it's greyed out and can't be adjusted.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Pressing f2 should get you to a menu that says character, quest book, inventory, (I forget what most of them are) you go down to inventory and equip. If f2 isn't working, I guess just keep trying other buttons. I went through and pushed every button on my keyboard to see if it would do anything because the instructions are so bad. btw, does f1 work to get you to the main menu? Also, make sure your not still talking to him, I don't think you can open the menu if you are still talking to him.

Thanks Doober - I've tried the every key (even with caps on and off) with no luck. It did take me a while to work out how to stop talking with Hatcher (had to press page down before I could exit).

I can't remember playing a less intuitive game . . . <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

LOL, tell me about it, its like a puzzle in itself just to figure out the keys. Sometimes you have to scroll down othertimes you have to hit spacebar. Makes no sense at all, but the game is alot of fun. So its all good!

Hello Lily and Doober.
I have Pieters latest beta modback with new interface etc.
But here is my help.
Start game . In main menu press "Options" bar.(with mouse).
In Options menu press "Controls" bar.
In controls menu press "Restore Default Buttons" (To make f2 work etc)
Also if you have beta mod it is good to do so.
Then press "Change Current Settings" There you can change buttons
as you like. Mouse buttons too. My mouse right button "walk"
mouse right and left pressed same time = "run". When you set this up
mouse right to "walk" and mouse left to "run".
Hope this helps and Bye.

I have the default settings on and e is to unsheath and a is the action button. spacebar strikes . z I believe shoots your weapon but you gotta equip it first.

Many thanks everyone for the help and advice.

I probably shouldn't admit this, but the problem was my new keyboard's function keys weren't activated <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> . . . I'm up and running now!

Thanks again!

Wasn't PotC available on the Xbox too? That might explain a lot of the control idosyncracies. Games that are set up to be played on a joypad usually don't adapt well to keyboard <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Is there a "how to get started playing guide" someplace? I'm going to take a look at the manual later (it's bound to be a PDF on the disk, sigh) but I've only managed to get through the tutorial and out onto the seas so far. Figuring out what I'm supposed to do from there though... well, it's a bit like the sea, mates. Deep. And doubly so with the Build mod installed.

With the game comes a normal paper manual, for all I know. Not that it is any good. Half the info in there is simply erroneous. For documentation/manuals for the Build, check the buildinfo subdirectory in your PotC folder. Especially the Build 11 ReadMe is quite useful to find out what is new.

There was a <a href="http://www.focusmm.co.uk/store/productpages/productinfo/ess519.html" target="_blank">re-release under the Ubisoft Exclusive/Focus Multimedia label</a> that doesn't seem to come with any kind of printed manual at all - just a bunch of PDF's on CD 2.

Howver, the build patch seems to work fairly happily on it.

As for the readme's, thanks. I think what I need though is a "Pirate of the Caribbean for Dummies" book

I'm afraid no such book exists. So you just ask away about everything you don't understand yet and we'll try to answer you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I think the biggie would be a map. There doesn't seem to be one either with the package or in the game itself. I haven't managed to find myself a navigator yet either <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Starting to find my sea-legs a bit though. Found out space will take me to the ship view, and f3 will usually take you back out again, and how to land on islands. Unfortunately I figured this out within sight of Oxbay, and lost my ship. Eventually managed to make my way to the Governors Mansion at Redmond though. At which point the idiot wanted to press my "ship" into service. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Please, like I'm going to be able to get close enough to take anything in a lifeboat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Thank the maker for save games! Dunno how real pirates made do without 'em!

Check out the "Miscellaneous" downloads section of the main PiratesAhoy! website; there are several maps there:
<a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,74/Itemid,46/lang,/" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/component/optio...temid,46/lang,/</a>

With a bit of luck, a map screen will be added to the Post Build 12 modpack soon as well. But that won't do you any good in plain Build 12. And if you're already having difficulty with Build 12, I would recommend not getting the Post Build 12 modpack until you're comfortable with how the game works and don't mind some annoying bugs.

About being pressed into service: You shouldn't sail straight into Oxbay harbour; you'll get blasted to smithereens. Instead, sail to a nearby shore and land there. Then walk into town.

Hope this helps you some. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Heh, yeah, it was right at the beginning of the game. I blundered across the sea view and got me ship sank by Oxbay, just as you said. Fortunately some of the crew managed to launch the lifeboat in the last few seconds and we managed to make good our escape to Redmond.

I'm just amazed that the Governor would think that a tiny little lifeboat like mine would have been worth ANYTHING in the defence of Redmond.

I', also amazed by the tutorial. A delicate hand holding session on how to walk from building to building, and nary a word on how to control the ship, which you'd think would be the important part. Thanks for the map though, that should come in bloody handy.

I recall, when the tutorial is almost over, you can ask Malcolm about sailing your ship. I'm not sure if he tells you anything useful to do then though. But you can see what he says. You can also ask for a suggestion of what to do next. He will suggest then that you loan some money from the loanshark, then buy some stuff that is exported at Oxbay and imported at Redmond.

I've got to admit that both the manual for the game and the tutorial are rather... bad... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
