    UPDATE: ok. i just ran a little check by starting a new game and killing a random person in the street and looting their corpse. it worked. :/ question is - does that mean i have to delete my old savegame and start over? or is there some way to try and fix the problem?

    nope. the only icon that shows is the gun/knife icon indicating i can proceed to the next stage of the fight. oh and i checked the corpses from head to toes.
