a few question

I`m playing Johan Elting, it was fine up until Spain sends me in a dungeon. I asked myself: why going there? I`m a sailor, not some dungeon crawler... Anyway, now I`m a spanish fugitive and can deal with it. I was wondering if I can join the navy (either English, French or Dutch) somewhere somehow? Or is it specifically for another storyline.

Also, I`m really confused about raising my personal flag. What does it do? And the results of raising it. So far, it seems that everyone becomes an enemy or something. Am I missing something there?

If your quest book has a heading saying Failure and the entry says - Dash it! I didn't meet the time limit. I should avoid the Vice-Admiral and any Spaniards from now on.

Then you have failed the task and are now out of the storyline ( quest ). So you can now freeplay.

You should be able to join another Navy - go and see a governor and offer your services - if your relations are bad with a nation that governor may not talk to you.

To restore good relations go and talk to a diplomat ( they can be found in taverns in pirate ports ) it will cost you money.

The personal flag affects your relations - nations will act according to how you have acted towards them. If you fly a national flag they will react according to their relations with that nation. - check the F2 relations screen

eg France and England are at war and Hostile - but you personally are friendly with France -- If you fly an English flag French ships & Forts will fire at you and be hostile -- if you fly your personal flag they will not fire at you.

Yeah, I have the Dash it quest line. I know about diplomats and money`s no problem. I`m carrying over a million gold with me.. I`m sailing with the dutch flag. Both France and England are neutral, but I managed to get LOM with them and a few promotions (2nd lieutenant or so). Their relation value is still negative (-25). So should I work until they have a positive value for the navy academy?

If you have got a promotion or rank from the governor then you have joined that navy.

The more tasks you do successfully for the governors of a country the more you will be promoted. and the friendlier they will become

- 25 is quite friendly - what is the symbol Scales or Tankards = friendly -- Crossed Pistol & Sword is hostile ( -60 or more )

Ok. And when the shipyard says "Can`t buy-Navy ship" does that mean that the ship rank is too high? Because I can have ships shown that says "can`t buy-rank too high" too. It`s a bit confusing

I'm confused now. And yes, it is my natural state. 3 I was under the impression that when you bought a LoM your pissed-o-meter got set to zero, and when you did something that governor likes it rises accordingly. The bigger the positive number the higher your rank. But, if you do something like sink one of that governors ships you lose the LoM and get a negative number again. :j3 Been there, done that.

Anyways, if it says you can't buy it in the shipyard because your rank is too low, you might be ranked as a 5 but the ship is a 3. That is not military rank but your skill rating. If it says you can't buy it because it's a Navy ship, then either your Navy rank is too low for that ship or you are not an officer in that Navy.

Does that make sense?

That`s why I posted. I`m confused too. I thought my relation were set to zero when I had a LOM, like the original game. But It didn`t.
here`s what really happened:

Started with Johan
Got the mission in the dungeon
Defect Spain
Raised Dutch flag and kept that one (Holland is friend with both France and England), but I was neutral with them personnally
Got a few store missions throughout all 3 countries
Got a mission to sink pirate ship around islands from all 3 governors
Got LOM with all of them
Went to sea, sinking pirates (I get like 1 reputation point per ship)
Came back and got promotions (but still in the negative)
Shipyards refuse to sell me navy boats.

I may have attacked some Spanish/Portuguese ships as Holland was at war with them, but not France nor England wich were friend with them. That may have screwed some things. Either this or I`m not high enough (rank or experience) to man them. I still have the boat Spain gave me for my first missions though. I`m level 19.

Edit: after a check, I do have positive values. I mismatched somewhere, my bad

Anyway, thanks for the answers, I`ll try to work more on this to see
