Hi all,
I've been away from playing POTC thanks to the WW2 sub-sim, Silent Hunter 3.
Dont get me wrong.. this IS related to pirate games in general, more importantly the idea of creating the 'perfect' pirate game really - well, perfect for me anyway <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
The thing is I've realised how similar it is in gameplay (and potentially graphics as well), to a POTC and indeed AOP. It makes my mouth water with all the ways the best of this game has to offer could be mixed with the Pirate theme!
I mean it already has a lot of similarities... such as searhing for targets to attack, avoiding more powerful enemies, managing crew and even upgrading your sub when you have enough credit to do so, and of course just generally sailing around.
Here are some of the examples of SH3 features that I would love to see in AOP;
1st person real world environments: You can actually sail around the entire world in first person, actually standing on the bridge/deck of your sub/ship watching the world go by in beautiful detail.
It comes with an physical map with convoy/trade routes marked out. You can sail into any port shown on the map anywhere in the World.
Detailed crew: You can see in full 3D highly modelled and textured crew as they stand on lookout with you on the bridge. Or if you wanted you can go down into the inside of your ship and see you crew perform their duties all around you. I understand you would have to lower the res for having more crew needed for a sailing ship but i know it can be done without too much compromise. The idea is whats important and although it has been done to a certain extent with the great mods etc there is more potential there, especially to get them looking and acting more realistic.
Proper map: You can go to your map and plot your course in real time, even before you set sail (something that is so simple but have yet to see it in a good pirate game apart from Cutthroats).
Crew management: You can go to a cuttaway image of your boat and drag and drop each crew member if you wanted based on their skills and level of experience, even fatigue, so that you can micro manage the performance of the sailing, maintainance, cannons etc. depending on your situation.
To me this represents all of the missing element from AOP - I may be wrong , but this proves that these things can be done. Now that I've seen these features I feel AOP will always lack something... even though it is sure to be a great game I will be thinking 'if only' all the time and what it would be like if were able to do these other things.
