Ascold Mission: Clearing the West Main

This is my first post, so forgive me if it is in the wrong place.

I am on the ascold quest chain, and after retrieving the inventory and sinking the 10 men of war off the Amatrice coast, I went back and good old Ascold told me I have to cleared out the Spanish expedition doing the looting. So I kill all the Spanish near the [Inca] Temple. (16 or so) But when I get back to Ascold, he says that I must also destroy the Spaniards "on the island."

What island is this? I have tried going back to Tenochtitlan, but there are no Spaniards there. I have tried every side path on the West Main, and ran into a Spanish patrol near Santa Catalina, but they were all friendly and smiles.

So where is the dang island that I am supposed to clear?

Can someone please help?

So how do I get inside the temple? Which kind of totem opens the thing. I spent all of my totems in Tenochtitlan and have none left, dang it! Any idea where I can get a totem to open this thing?

Once you get the quest the door is open. It is impossible for the spanish soldiers to enter without opening the door, right
