attacking st.louis fort

I thought i would attack st.louis fort on island of st.martin.I wanted to test my new ability to send a ship to attack with a landing party.We both fired upon the fort to weaken it's defences,but my cannons did no damage.Can this fort be conquered or is it a bug?BTW what does upgrading your ship with "flush" do for the performance of the ship?

The guns on the forts are right on top of the walls and are quite hard to hit, so you may just be missing :shrug
All the upgrades explain what they do in the discriptions :yes
