Bugfixes and Such

POTC is one of my favorite game--when it works <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> . However, I happen to like the game the way it is, without all the features/ships/requirements/etc. added by the Build Mod. The dilemma for me is that the Build Mod fixes many of the crashes/freezes/errors that I get while playing the game. Is there any place where the Build is broken down into its components so I can download JUST the bugfixes? Or am I stuck with either a buggy game or a game with features that, for me, detract from the experience?

Thanks,
Nick

Nope; no bugfix-only versions, I'm afraid. What don't you like about the features? There's plenty of really good one and usually the ones that people dislike can easily be turned off or tweaked to their liking. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

The problem, I guess for me, is the lack of documentation. The features I particularly dislike are the money system and the whole fame/romance system. What I really want is a pirate game like Sid Meier's Pirates accept that is more about the personal aspect and freeform that makes PotC really great. Also, the big change that I want to see is the ability to remap controls so I don't need to hit F2 to get to that screen and I don't need to use the arrow keys to navigate menus (I want to use W and A to go up and down).

Maybe I'm am being picky, but I like to play games that are really well documented so I know about every little nuance to the game. After reading through all the material in the docs folder, I still came across things that I had no idea how it worked or how to use it.

We would LIKE to have a proper manual, but we're not going to get one unless somebody makes it. Unfortunately a lot of people started work on various manuals, but nobody ever finished any. But this is where the forum comes in: We're always happy to answer any questions you might be having.

As for the fame/romance system: You can just ignore that, can't you? If you don't get a Letter of Marque, you can still go pirating away and your crew's money will just be like the ordinary money you had in the original game.

As for configuring the controls, you can change most of them in the interface and in Build 13 you can change ALL of them in PROGRAM\BuildDefaultControls.c. So it is quite possible to change the button you need to open the interfaces.

Thanks.

Actually, your previous post is rather intriguing. I'm not sure how much time I'd be able to put into it, but I think it would be a fun challenge to write a manual for the build. Is anyone already undertaking such a venture?

what was the name of that topic where i put up that text on the 3D sailing mode? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_confused.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="icon_confused.gif" /> that one pretty much included everything there was to know.

Many people have started on it, nobody ever finished. Which wouldn't have been that bad, if only they'd have released what they did before disappearing. Then the next person could start from that. But no such luck. Nobody's doing any work on a manual at the moment, unless I'm very much mistaken. You would be MOST welcome to do some work on it! Feel free to ask any questions you might be having. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

I just installed the build, and I can't find the file PROGRAM\BuildDefaultControls.c. However, there is a folder PROGRAM\CONTROLS and there are three file inside of that: controls.c, init_pc.c, and init_xbox.c. Which of these do I need to change and what inside them do I need to change so, for example, I can open the F2 screen with TAB or move around in menus with the W and S keys?

Thanks,
Nick

What Build did you install? In Build 13 Final you should have the file PROGRAM\BuildDefaultControls.c where you can change everything in a centralized way. Otherwise you can also modify PROGRAM\CONTROLS\init_pc.c.

That should be build13 final, if you got problem founding a file you can use window to search for you, just right click the root folder where the game is then hit the search option, then right down the file you need to found and click search.
