Can I leave my officer in my ship at the port register?

Im planning to do the CoAS quest but I dont know how to leave my officers, can somebody help me?

Buy a cheap ship and set him as captain - or set him as captain of one of your "good" ships you would like to keep for later.
Then store his ship at the portmaster - when you are done with COAS you can come back and claim your ship with your officer again.
