Does tacking into the wind work right?

I'm having trouble sailing to the East. I can tack easily enough in Sea Dogs and PotC, but in this game it seems very hard to judge the wind direction and best point to sail at. Any advice for a slow Pirate?

Might be covered already, but it seems to depend alot on the type of ship. Ships with triangular sails are better at sailing towards the wind than those with square sails.

Der be a wind directional compass in de bottom left corner,de red needle <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Also look in the pirate pedia, click on specific ship types and click on the best directions the ship sails at, it will show a diagram of sailing directions that will help.

Yea, historically, I have looked at this, the Sloop should be a good one to have a square sail(s), be fast, and still sail into the wind. If you do have square sails though, the thing is you have to tack at more "acute" (That's less than a 90 degree "corner" angle), and takes more time. But those triangular sails are close to, if not "obtuse" (more than a 90 degree angle, wide) tack.
