Finding lone targets?

Herculite

Landlubber
Ok so I start a new game at journeymen level, do a bunch of escort and fetch to at least get a fully equipped ship and I fill up the weapons locker, find an officer with 10 in gunnery, and decided to go hunting.

The issue is that no one seems to travel alone. I found one solo ship and that was on apprentice level. Its always a group of merchants, a solo merchant with heavy escort, etc.

So I decided to go vulture and find a big battle where I was friendly with one side. Then I try boarding and get very quickly killed no matter what. Its me and my 1 officer vrs about 5 french.

So really two separate questions here.

How do you find solo targets?
How does boarding work with numbers? I am in the starter ship so I have 23 crew. Obviously not everyone is rendered so does it mean the french ship had like 90 or so crew so I only get 2 and they get 5?

There are lone targets on the worldmap occasionally, but I think they're pretty uncommon.

In boarding, the game checks the ratio of your crewmembers vs. the enemy.
If you have a lot of crew, you'll have more and they'll be stronger.
Raising your morale prior to boarding can help with your crew's HP points.
Also, use lots of grapeshot on the enemy before boarding.

and be careful with your selected boarder model. some versions reomve the rest of your boarding crew entirely. best stick to nathaniel's original boarders. new game required after selected a different model for it to take effect.

Well I've learned a few things.

There are lone ships out there, but the message screen doesn't always imply that. One or half a dozen, you don't get a good indication of numbers, which from a tactical standpoint is kinda lousy because you appear so close to them. I know this is more reason to direct sail but I'm still figuring out the basics.

As for the boarding, it got far easier once I managed to capture a frigate. 391 guys means its normally even odds or better and I managed to board and capture a 4th and a 3rd rate (and horribly the game crashed right when I finished with the third rate, it seems to be related to trying to loot corpses after the melee) .

Indeed I've been noticing the "Sail Ho!" screen doesn't always indicate things properly. Quite annoying. :modding

Try using "Save At Sea", though you can't so that when there's enemies close. :?
