First time, some questions!

RaptiCon

Hello!

Well, I've just gotten the game and I love it. I played it for an hour, but then I stopped because there was a lot of questions going through my mind. I got a lot of answers looking around in the forum, but some remain `un-answered`. So here I go..

1. In the options screen, you can choose flag colour and sail symbol etc. Does this affect the game? Like if I take the Pirate thing will everyone hate me and so on?

2. I keep reading about classes, like apprentice etc. When do you get to choose these things and how do they work? Is this the same as getting new ranks like Captain, Major etc. by the Governours?

3. I have also read about certain items you can buy, like new spyglasses, shoes, swords etc. Is this also later on in the game? Do you buy this in taverns or what?

I would appreciate long answers! Thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

1. It has no effect, regardless of your flag, other ships will call you a pirate when they approach. (options pages `5-6`)

2. These are the Difficulty levels you may choose when starting a new game. You may also advance up one level after you divide the plunder if it was a successful voyage. They are on page 15 of the US English version manual.
a. Apprentice (easiest)
b. Journeyman
c. Adventurer
d. Rogue
e. Swashbuckler (hardest)

The higher the difficulty the tougher your opponents. In addition the higher your level the more gold % you get when you Divide Plunder. On the down side at tougher levels its harder to keep crew morale high.

3. You may receive this items as a gift from the Governors daughter (pgs `47-48`.) after you have danced with her and impressed her. At times you may be offered these Special Items (pgs `113-116`) from the Mysterious Traveller (pg 48.) in the inn, for a price of course.

I hope these answers were "long" enough. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

That deffinetly cleared most of my questions up <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But I forgot one thing, you can also choose which captain you want to join in the first of the game, and one captain belongs to a certain nation. Does this have any affect?

Yes. Depending on the time that you choose to play. Some nations have more ports than others at different time periods. (pages `15-16`, `85-96`)

On Apprentice level the only option is 1660 (pag 14) If you choose a different difficulty level, you may choose any of the time periods.

Oh man. The first time I created a game, I didn't get to choose anything when I was in the 'Crew Signup' thingy. Bug maybe? But I saw it now. But the time period was greyed out, I couldn't pick anything there. Is it smart to start out as an Apprentice? After my hour I thought it was pretty easy.

The first time you play it defaults to Apprentice and you cannot choose anything else. After that you may pick whatever you want.

I would encourage you to start at Jouneyman, if you still think it is too easy, simply divide the plunder, and IF, it has been a successful cruise for you the game will give you the option to go up another level. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The difference is the distribution of cities. In the earlier periods, there are less towns and they belong mostly to Spain. So, the earlier periods are harder because if you choose to attack Spain, friendly ports are rare, if you choose to serve the Spanish King, there aren´t many enemies to attack.

Oh okay. I play the time period choice nr. 3, I think it's 1660. And the SPanish has put a bounty on my head for 7000,- How will that work out?

To get rid of the bounty, you can:

1)Wait a few months, and don't attack any Spanish cities or ships, and it will go away.

2)Attack pirate boats, indian boats, and the enemies of the Spanish, and it will go away.

3) Go to a Jesuit Mission and talk to the abbot. He will probably offer to get you amnesty. (note that I said probably - you may need the Jesuit special items) You will then escort a boat to the nearest Spanish city. If the boat makes it (you will have to fight to keep it alive) you will be granted amnesty. If you start attacking them again, you may get your bounty back.

4) If you can sail into a Spanish city, and they don't attack you yet, you can talk to the Governor, and he may offer to forget about your past for a bribe. You may be able to do that if you sneek into a Spanish city, and successfully make it to the Governor's mansion. I haven't tried that one, but I think it's possible.

Aye Mate #4 is possible,de Spanish Governur jest offerd me amnesty fer 4000 gold <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
