I was just wanderin if their was any way to alter the players apearance without downloadin anything

Thankyou in advance

What do you want to do, Scallywagjack? Play as a different character? You can do that by going into a tailor shop - each town has one but you have to walk around to find them (walk past door, a log note will pop up to tell you it's the tailor shop). You can go in and buy new skins from the tailor for most all of the characters that run around PotC...

Which one were you wishing to be?

SkallyWag Jack,

Without downloading at least one program that is pretty much impossible. If I'm understanding what you want to do, you want to change the way the clothes on models look. The problem is that the files that have the "pictures" of the characters have to be converted from one format to another before you can alter them. To convert these files you need a tool that you can get here;

<a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=ModdingTools&v=10ku" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...ingTools&v=10ku</a>
The modders have put together tutorials that you can read here;

<a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=Tutorials&v=28e" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...Tutorials&v=28e</a>

and these should give you a good idea of the process to follow to change the character models around.

That about does it, Scallywagjack (thank you, Sir Christopher!) - if you've got any questions on re-texturing, ask, we'll be happy to help! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I got a question about the character things. I can read the .tga files, and I can edit them, but not very well, everything would look pretty fake and mono-colour if I did that. Basically, Im afraid that I'll make the chars look really bad if I try, and I dont know of any way to make the colours more real (shading etc.)

What program are you using to edit the tga files?

Here is one thing you can do, if you're using photoshop you are only editing a copy of the file, there won't be any changes that take effect until you reconvert and replace the file the game uses, and so you can make a renamed practice copy and try to edit it until you get enough practice to where you're getting the results you want.

I'm not familiar enough with GIMP to advise you how to use it, but I believe it's supposed to be close enough to Photoshop so these suggestions MIGHT make sense to you.

I think you're concerned with losing the shadows when you change colors in the clothing - that can be a problem - you either have to try to put them back in over whatever color you've laid in there, or do a change of hue to get a difference without losing the shading. There are also ways (in Photoshop) to do a fill using percentages and certain filters that will keep the shadows...

The shading - creating it on your own - is a tough thing to do, using the computer, unless you already have the artistic training to draw like that...

With Paint Shop Pro (which I use) and Photoshop - and therefore no doubt Gimp, although I have not used it myself - one way to simply change colour of things is to use layers; you make a new layer on top of the cloth, for instance, and merely affect the colour of the layers underneath.

It sounds complex, perhaps, and I could only really explain it in Paint Shop Pro, I suppose...

As for making new <i>skin</i> skin (heheh, couldn't resist it) I am personally rather poor with that, as I have never really learnt the anatomy of the human body when it comes to shading muscles and so on. I have done far more cloth and such, even if I am far from a master still! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

It takes a fair bit of work, though, at least for me. I tend to do it only when the inspiration comes, heh! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> But keep doing it and you will learn - that is how I know most things I know today, even more so with anything to do with computers.

But feel free to ask (or send a PM) if there is anything. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Using Photo shop and the Hue and Saturation feature, I've been able to change colors of parts of outfits, but retain the shading that the original model had.

With the Hue and Saturation feature, on the Silehard model, I was able to keep the pattern on his blue "gown", <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

and change it to the Royal Purple and retain the pattern.

Keep in mind that a little change can make a big difference, but it sounds like you're on the right track by practicing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

By the way, did I stress Backups, backups, backups!? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

GIMP? <a href="http://docs.gimp.org/en/ch02s04s03.html" target="_blank">http://docs.gimp.org/en/ch02s04s03.html</a>
Also there's <a href="http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/" target="_blank">http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/</a> which might help get you up and running.
Now, afraid I've never really /used/ the GIMP--I'm lucky enough to have PS--so I can't directly help, but if you tell me what you want to do maybe I can google it up for you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

You can try Paint Shop Pro for 30 days... That's what I am using (if paid for, heh). I could help with that one, for instance.

Other than that I don't know much about art programs beyond Photoshop and that GIMP is supposed to be able to do most things PS/PSP can do.

Yes, that's right, GIMP is free, and presumably will work a lot like Photoshop, or that's what I've heard...

I got Photoshop (full version 3.5) a long time ago, bundled with a REALLY GOOD scanner I bought - and I've subsequently upgraded ever since because it's a heckuva program. If GIMP does even HALF what Photoshop can do, it should be more than enough to get you through the skinning process. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Take a look here, it may help: <a href="http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/" target="_blank">http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/</a> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
