Moneylender quest

Moneylender quest, the one in which he gave you 3 chests full of gold and you are supposed to bring to someone.
Now I am curious what happens if you sold those chests and time limits expires.
Probably reputation lost but i'm not sure.
I'm asking this because if you want to sold the chests, for every one you get about 13k, and you can get rich early in game
So is it worth it???
I tried to sold them but in logbook wasn't any changes. I think the time limit must expire to happen something but i didn't tried that.
Anyone have some insight on this?

Well I didn't sell them but one time I didn't make it in time to drop it off (like I could anyway cause he wanted it in Havana and the Spanish hate me) and my reputation dropped like two or three levels. I restarted from a earlier save though cause I couldn't find any work.
