this ocurred to me when i started the hunt for rheims (unsure if you need to go to nevis first once you start that quest). or maybe because the 'strange things' side quest required me to go there. in any case, entering it's port now crashes the game. no logs are generated, while errorlogging IS enabled. do i get two character interactions for two different quests at the same time there, causing the crash? it's been a while since i played this game. i'll see if i can bypass it partially by entering the town itself by land and continuing the quest from there. going to port from the landside causes the same crash, so i know it's located exactly there.

Both of those quests have a wharf rat at the port that you want to talk to. Maybe that is what is causing your ctd. You can do Rhiems without talking to the wharf rat, but you need him for strange things. Try them in that order.

yes, that was the plan. i'll see how it works out.

i've never gotten any logs. ever, of any kind. it seems to be an odd quirk of my game.

You do have error logging enabled as per the FAQ?

no good. the pirate port still buggers up. curiously, i could only ask the tavern owner about the mephisto.

EDIT: i could continue the quest for rheims by talking to her a second time. she didn't want to tell me where he was (which is odd, since i met the requirements), and on walking out the door, i was unable to move. the NPC offering to tell me rheim's location never showed up.

Do you have a save from before you sail to Nevis? Sometimes Virgile Mendez messes up for me and doesn't show up at the merchant in St. Pierre. I then have to start over to get him to show. Perhaps that will get you going.

Yeah, that guy outside the tavern is unreliable.

no, not at all. i've been saving frequently due to testing what the problem was, but only keep two saves at the same time.

mendez did give me problems. he went down in a flurry of cannonballs after he didn't leave me at puerto rico, though i had, surprisingly, nothing to do with it.

well, i wouldn't know. i don't keep many saves at the same time. just two. doesn't slow down no matter how often i save, but i do recall having had that problem a few years ago.

bah. i'll just start over then.

there was however, a problem i noticed. you say that nigel only leaves in port royal after spreightstown has been liberated, right? well, after the liberation, you END the quest in port royal. going to port to start the search for rheims or whatever doesn't make nigel leave. maybe when you return to port royal some time later, but not when i left. could be another bug.

EDIT: well, i went back to port royal, and nigel stuck with me as always. god this game's buggy. also, i just realised that the convo about nigel not leaving was in another topic.

I've never taken Nigel so know nothing about this. Maybe I'll take him next time out. There is always a next time.

yeah, i'll just stick with artois next time. i know he works properly. at least more or less.

how's the music pack? i discovered there's still room for perfection, but it does work as-is.

I installed your music pack last night and played for a while. This was the first time for doing so. I didn't do steps 3 & 4 and it worked fine. There was no music in the hotel room or tavern. Is this correct? I noticed that during a long sea battle I didn't get irritated by the music like before. The town music gives a good sense of hustle and bustle. I prefer period music but these movie scores are fine.

Oddly, when it came time to quit I checked on what needed to be done and both Rhiems and Strange Things need to go to Nevis. This should be fun.

For saves I let them go until until told it's full, then delete all but two.

no tavern music? that's not what's supposed to happen, so i'm thinking you'll have to remove some unrequired soundtracks. it usually works. aditionally, you might want to try pressing F11 when not in a tavern. as for the hotel room, you might be right about that one. i replaced it with another soundtrack ages ago which i never included in the music pack, though i think it's got the same name as one of the stock soundtracks, so it shouldn't matter. the tavern room does need fixing though. it's now the only location with that soundtrack, so i might replace it with a soundtrack that's used elsewere as well for eficiency. i might still change a few other things, but i think all the major tracks are pretty much in their final state. i just wish i had something better for the pirate towns, though the excisting one has some good bits in it. and one of the seabattle themes ends oddly.

really, the whole point of replacing the music is to avoid boredom. those sailing trips can be damn long. and it just has something to have bombastic music accompanying you wherever you go, as if you're the biggest badass in the caribbean or whatnot. xD:

after starting a new game, i tried doing the strange things quest first. now everything works fine. also, i've taken artois with me this time round. i seem to have bad experiences with nigel. never managed to finish his plotline due to bugs and whatnot.

in other news, i managed to find my custom character skin! downside is, it looks better from the front, and i don't want to have any of my officers walking around as myself.

Well, I sailed from Puerto Rico to Nevis. The first wharf rat I met on the dock talked about Rhiems. Went to the tavern and Inez Diaz talked about the Mephisto and then Rhiems. Went back to the dock and talked to the other wharf rat about the Mephisto, then left. No drama. :nerbz Up until a few months ago I had bad problems with different quests getting mixed up so I had to do one at a time.

If I take Artois with me into Sao Jorge after the first time he runs off into the jungle and dies, especially if I accidentally talk to him. But his quest stays alive until the treasure is found.

I'll tinker with those sound files.

what music are you hearing in french towns? something on accordion, or not? something doesn't seem to be working quite right there. the old soundtracks occasionally stick long after you've replaced them with something else.

I did it wrong. I didn't merge the files but used just your addons. You see, my wife made a nice steak and baked potato and veggies with mushrooms dinner, topped off with a bottle of wine. She didn't want any wine so I drank the bottle myself. Then tried to install your sounds. I'll get it right later today or tonight.

merge? it's just a matter of overwriting them, actually.

oh, i see. you removed the original music folder first. that would explain it. actually, this might be a good thing. if you haven't merged the folders yet, you should rename my version of Hispaniola to Gorod-2, and THEN merge the folders. it was a mistake i made. i'll be updating my uploaded music pack soon, but i don't know when yet.
