nVidia drivers

I have had problems with nvidia drivers for some time now. The last decent drivers I had were 188 or so from December 2008. The problem is that they occasionally crash and restart. In other games the screen goes black for a second and then it recovers and continues. In PotC it usually ctds.

Well, I got a message from macroshaft today about it and got new nvidia drivers installed. I had been using 197.45 drivers which still have the problem. The ones installed today are 258.96.

There is a very large difference! :woot Everything looks sharper and everything moves smoother. I have always had trouble with the sound cutting out during sea battles. So far after three battles, one fought in a storm, the sound is solid. Those 32 pounders really BOOM! In this game I had pretty much given up on boarding fights because of ctds. Well, 3 battles, 3 boardings, and 0 ctds! :woot So, after 2 hours of play time I can heartily recommend these drivers. Only more play time will tell if the ctds are cured, so...... :piratesahoy!

Working nVidia drivers? What are those? ;)

Might have to look into that - I'm getting tired of display driver BSODs. xD: I've had more BSODs with this machine in less than a year than I did during my old HP's whole seven and a half year lifespan.

Since I posted the first message things got ugly. The game I've been using suddenly ctds when loading a save. Starting a new game also ctds. So, I did a new install. It works, but badly. All of the old problems with sound cutting out and ctds are back. I had an easy dirty dozen ctds last night. In the forlorn hope that these drivers were installed wrong, I'm going to do a cleanup and reinstall today. Or maybe go back to the OLD drivers that work.

update: Uninstalled the drivers in safe mode, then did a search in windoze7. Didn't find anything. Did a manual search and found 3 nvidia folders. Deleted them. Then did a search using Driver Sweeper from Guru3d.com. It found a load of nvidia stuff for their video cards, chipsets and sound cards. Deleted. Then installed the oldest drivers for win7 at the nvidia site. 186.18. More testing required, but it is ok so far.

They've still got those old drivers up? I might have to give those a go - the 18x.x drivers are supposed to be the last good ones they put out. :yes
