Pistols - to reload with sword equiped or not?

Groggsy

Landlubber
I just had my first game last night with the new mod build (12.1) and although I specified to have my character NOT reload pistol with sword in hand at same time I found it still reloaded? Maybe i made a mistake and entered '1' instead of '0' or other way round. Anyway the point I am going to raise about this idea of adding realism by not being able to reload whilst standing there in fight mode with sword drawn sort of appealed to me to start off with. But I was thinking.. at the start of the game (where i am now) even though i have 2 pistols I can only equip and use one of them. I understand that you need to 'level up' to use more than one, especially for the RPG element of the game. I found that during my fight last night with 3 bandits I was reloading and holding the bad guys at bay. Of course I used the pistol a second time and won the day <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
But it got me thinking about the whole point of having to level up to use multiple pistols - at least i am guessing there is the ability to do that, I'm not sure off hand. If we were talking realisim when in a duel you would sell your own mother to have as many pistols tucked about your person as possible! So the way i look at it is this;

The 'reload' period merely represents the time it takes to drop your existing pistol that you have just shot with and reach for one of your other pistols, prime it ready for firing and there you have it. I feel justified having the ability to reload as i look at it as just grabbing another pistol, even though it is the same one in the game. I think having to have a special ability to equip more than one pistol is silly. I mean how much training do you need to pull another pistol out of yer belt?!
I draw the line at using it say 4 or 5 times.. but I've never had to use it more than 3 times at the most so far. 3 pistols being carried abot isnt exactly unbelievable soI dont see any issues with it.

What do others think on the subject?

I seldomly use the pistol anyways, I much too occupied with blocking to shoot, one shot when I approach the enemy, maybe.
The default when installing the build is, as far as I know, that you can´t reload while having the sword drawn, I know that because I never changed it and can´t reload.

On multiple pistols, we´ve got some already in Pieter Boelen´s Modpack, I think it´s a set of three pistols.

Aye,I like yer idea O' equip'n two pistols at de same time, would be cool but not possible.as fer not being able te reload when yer sword drawn,ye can toggle that off ur on in build setting h folder <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

By default, you have one pistol equiped, so you can only use one. It only reloads if you haven't got your sword drawn, because you can't fence and reload your gun at the same time. With Alan Smithee's brace of pistols mod, you can get a brace of pistols, being multiple pistols, so you can fire multiple shots. That way, there's no need to equip two guns at the same time; you just need to buy yourself a brace of pistols instead of a single pistol. And you need the gunman ability to use them.

Yep, the pistol braces are `super-fun`. I get a trio and it's enough to kill most group encounters in three quick shots, all `Tarentino-esque`. Blamblamblam.

Though I've been thinking, they're maybe a little too powerful. The best ones, at best quality, turn out to be the second most powerful weapons after grenades. Do you think, Pieter, they should be made slightly less powerful (or the blunderbus more powerful? It's weaker than the grapeshot pistol, despite its enormous size)?

I wouldn't really know. I should actually go and PLAY the game to find out what the proper balance should be. Or someone else could do that... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I wonder if there's a way to gauge how far away the target has to be for the weapon to have full effect. I mean, blasting someone at close range with a blunderbuss is PROBABLY going to at least knock them down, if not kill them outright.

And perhaps a delay in how soon you can draw and shoot your next shot on those braces of pistols can be worked into the equation... ??? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

D'oh! My post wouldnt have existed if I'd known about the brace mod! That solves everything. I dont mind the fact that you need some level up either to gunman as it's pretty easy. I've started a new game now with the reloading ability turned off. Super idea for a mod.... I just cant believe that it wasnt in the original game. Imagine a captain of a boarding party with one poxy pistol in his belt. I know I'd love to be able to carry four! Start off with one in each hand... fire those from a bit of a distance... grab another 2 let them have it when you can smell the rum on ther breath! then finish off whats left with yer trusty cutlass. Well thats what I'd do anyway If i had the ability to have 2 weapons. Maybe some day eh modders? *Nudge nudge wink wink* <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Speaking of modding... How come theres no houses for players should they want to spend a bit of time being a landlubber. Or just a place to store stuff you know? I like the idea of owning your own residence as in Morrowind for example. Is it because the code doesnt allow placing of new buildings as it doesnt come with an editor? It seems to me you would struggle to find a space in most towns anyway.

Also on the subject of modding, can anyone give me advice on how or where to start if I wanted to help out with 3D object making? I've been in the games industry for about 10 years as an artist/animator but never really ventured into the world of modding. Any help would be greatefully recieved.

Happy St Paddys day by the way! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Also, the Animists cave is being worked upon so that when you finish the "Strange Things in the Archipelago" quest you will be able to use that place for your own.

[/quote]Good modeling programs are expensive, but here's a suggested start - if you want to use what Akella used, try to find v4.5 of the full version of Maya (not the PLE, or personal learning edition). It has to be v4.5 because Akella wrote a plugin so Maya could export to .gm format.

Other programs that can export to VRML such as 3D Studio Max, can be used to make your models, and then you can use Inez Dias's Tool (handy for lots of things!) for changing to .gm format.

There are a lot of tutorials on how to do things to modify PotC in the PotC Modding Wiki. <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net/`ftopic1561-0`.php" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net/`ftopic1561-0`.php</a> There are also links there to helpful tools you can download.

Others can make more suggestions. I'm not a modeler, but would like to learn. I DO, however, write mods (after a fashion, I am no coding genius by any means!). If you are a graphics artist, you will be familiar with Photoshop - so you can paint new skins for ships and characters!

Also, if you can crack how to write new animations for this game, that would be ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> We have a lot of things we'd like to do that need new animations... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Regarding multiple pistols.
Before I, er, disappeared, one project I was somewhere between considering and starting, was to allow `pistol-swapping` on the fly.

The problem with it however, is that individual items are not tracked separately; there is one attribute for all items of a given type, and its value is the quantity of those items you carry.
So you can't save multiple reload states of pistols the way it's set up now.

One possible solution is (but of course) to rewrite the inventory system. Mwahaha!

Another, only somewhat less, um, foolha--err, complex, approach, would be to add a "second" inventory, the `ready-to`-hand inventory, and reduce the normal inventory to "loose in a backpack" inventory; one could only swap between pistols (and swords!) in the ready pool, and only at leisure transfer items between the ready and the secondary inventory.
In the Ready inventory all items would be stored individually (of necessity) since there would be limited slots in the Ready inventory.

Err. I mean, the former is to _completely_ rewrite the inventory system, the latter is to just add a new inventory system, and, to be honest, is probably about the same amount of work in all. But I still prefer it I think.
