Playing a bit with a character `re-texture`

Unholy Terror,
Storm Modder
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> all...

Was idling away the day today while the owner of my place was in painting, so I thought I'd do some painting too...

Here is the original idea - to make Catalina de Erauso, not necessarily a pirate, but a real "wild woman" of the 1600's.

Here's a link to her story: <a href="http://www.swordmaiden.com/history/mundane/catalina.php" target="_blank">http://www.swordmaiden.com/history/mundane...ne/catalina.php</a>

Here are some portraits:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I got it into my head to see if I could satisfactorily create a woman masquerading as a man character for PotC...

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso_model1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

It's rough, as you can see (still need to work on shadows for the face, the clothing)... I wanted to use a Spanish soldier skin but I really hate those helmets they wear. Don't know if I'm going to do anything with her yet, but as I said, I was idly playing...

Anyhoo, what do you think? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Gash , the women in back days looks terrible . Thanks God am living in 21st centurey <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cheers.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="cheers.gif" />:

Which model/skin did you use? Must be one of those ubiquitous French soldiers. And did you freehand the face? I'd expect you would just paste another lady's face over it... It's a good likeness to the portraits, but I can't tell it's a lady. Maybe without the 5 o'clock shadow...

LOL, I think thats the point Smithee... After all, she is trying to pass herself off as a man...for some weird reason.. Anyways, it looks good so far Cat!

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Haha, yes, that's a French soldier, and yes she is trying to pass as a man... And if she looked too pretty, I would imagine she would not look like a man...

Historically, Danielle is *not* the norm for women in the age of sail... Back then, if you were a woman who wanted to go to sea or into the military (for whatever reason), you would HAVE to disguise yourself as a man to do it. Bonney and Read, who you have heard of, were exceptions, but there were plenty of women who "passed" as men to get into the military or onto a ship - and you don't know about them because they kept their gender a secret. A younger woman might pass as a younger lad - which is how de Erauso started her life away from the convent.

Hard life and hard drinking will also make you look... Ummmm... Less than lovely... She led no life of ease...

I am unhappy with my model choices because none of them really have the facial structure I want - some have little beards, which are modeled, and it wouldn't do to have a `clean-shaven` neat point on her chin, that would be unnatural (haha!)... You think she's got a five o'clock shadow NOW, you should have seen "her" when I started! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I *am* doing the face freehand - "pixelchasing", as Rafe Bligh puts it - and it's taken some time to get the face looking like I want it - it's still not right but I am stuck with that face shape which I have to try to change via the judicious use of shadow &tc...

I *might* play with adding a cuirass, to make it more like the first portrait than the second... <shrug> I dunno, I doubt I'll have time to do much more on this at the moment...

Looks more like a musketeer, maybe it's the face model. Really, Really, Really good skin though, amazing, if I dare say so myself.
-Capo

I hate the hair. I wish there were some French soldier models that did NOT have that long hair, but... <shrug> Such is fashion! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The rest of him/her looks pretty nice, pants and boots, put in some gauntleted gloves (this model is good for that because of the frilly lace cuffs of the uniform), &tc... Just have to line up the sash and maybe do some color changes. Also getting a weird color where the skin connects in the back, need to fix that...

It is subtle, but if you will notice I gave her a slight curl to one side of her mouth - like she is smirking. I want to see if I can get the eyes looking a bit more "sly", to match... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

If I find some time today I might work on her again.

Your work is looking great, Lady Cat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

From what you're saying about the hair, maybe that pirate model with the blonde hair, the one I find myself refering to as "`Ah-nold`", has hair that is more of a length to suir your purposes.

Those were strange times in clothes, this picture reminds me a bit of the Spanish Governor's outfit, but kinda illustrates the ambiguity of the line distingushing male and female fashions at the time. I think you should switch the head you are working with to the Spanish Governor's head and take away the beard and moustache, just so I can see if my conviction that he strongly resembles Marlo Thomas is correct. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="http://www.laokay.com/Lathumb/Laphoto/Blueboy.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I don't know how many Shakepeare plays have the "Girls dresses up as a Boy" storyline, in them, but maybe it wasn't entirely influenced by the edicts forbidding women from performing on stage. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Catalina de Erauso, yeah, great woman!!... Here in Spain we call her 'la monja alférez', could be translated like the '`leutnant-nun`' <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

This was the era of the first "metrosexuals," in fact... [picture a smiley here, which I refuse to actually insert as they are too disgustingly cute & cliche for me.]

If it were me I'd go all out and give "her" a beard... oh, maybe start with a real lady's face after all, and just add an obviously false beard. That'd be hilarious.

<!--`QuoteBegin-nachinus`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(nachinus)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Catalina de Erauso, yeah, great woman!!... She's a real life `folk-hero` in Spain. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

So I've continued to fiddle with this - fixed up some better shadows for the eyes and cheeks - although I'm unhappy right now with the nose, will have to fix that yet...

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso_model1a.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> previous
<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso_model1b.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> current
<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/derauso1a.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> actual portrait

Still not quite right. Need to fix up the eyes a bit more, now that I look at them, and the corner of the mouth.... The "raised eyebrow" is intentional.

Sir Christopher, I wanted this model for the hat...

OIC! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />
Have to bear with me Cat, I'm still getting used to the dreds. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />
I've alway liked that hat myself, different Musketeer though. Let me know when you create a plume, like Cyrano's, so I can put it on my character's hat. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

This is looking better and better and with the before and after pics it illustrates how the same face has masculine and feminine traits within it. (She's starting to look a little like Eric Idle, know what I mean, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more, say no more,) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />
