Playing the Game

Thanks for great welcome and advice on my DVD player in my first post. As I get closer to getting that problem resolved, I’m looking forward to playing, but still feeling a little disoriented about where to begin.

I think rich explained it best in another post where he mentioned something about obtaining letters of marque from multiple nationalities even though they are at war with each other. If I remember correctly, I started a game joining the English. After visiting the Governor, I sailed to the enemy Spanish town and accidentally entered it. I was able to speak to the Governor there and he gave me a letter of marque also and said they were at war with the English.

So I’m a little lost here about what to do and I’m looking for some advice.

Somehow I don’t think I can just go attack both sides and get away with it.

You can attack any one you want to... you'll suffer the consequences, but with a big enough crew and some skill, those consequences won't matter <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

When I start a career, I usually get letters of marque from everyone but the spanish and just pound on them exclusively, as somebody is almost ALWAYS at war with them - so while you may not make everyone happy, you are bound to make someone happy. Then, once I have maxed out all other ranks, I secure a letter or marque from the Spanish - by sacking or sneaking in to town, then I turn on whoever they are at war with. You won't lose rank from the other countries, but they'll eventually put a price on your head. But, by then, you'll be used it it!

Happy Hunting!

It really is up to you mate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> If you feel you only wamt a realistic one letter of marque, attack everything and anyone else other than the English who gave you an "official" letter of Marque. If you fancy having everyone on your side, sail around meeting everyone first and then begin your plundering. Whilst not massively realistic to have 4 nations all happy to fund your war on each other and in turn them it still be fun <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> From there plunder, pilfer and pillage, and patience - 4 p's to a successful cruise <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

edit: Or like Toast said, and indeed my most common way of playing, get one from every nation bar the Spanish, and then bully them till your hearts content <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Thanks. I'll give that a shot. It's nice to have "some" kind of goal while you are learning the game.

There seems to be a statute of limitations on your actions. You can attack the interests of one nation very hard, and then if you have left them alone for awhile, they will forget about it. I had a recent game in which the bounty placed on me had risen to 34,000 gold. I spent a few months doing some other quests like the named pirates and treasures, and then split the loot. I would notice that my bounty was dropping as I did this. Then I divided the loot, and when I came back after my 6 months off the bounty was gone. I also think that for each good action you do (attacking pirates and indians) it cancells out some of the bad. I try to attack the pirates or indians at every chance. This gets me promotions from all nations, even though I am not really serving their interests on purpose.

To make a nation friendly towards you faster, visit a monastery and talk with the abbot. Often he'll offer to put in a good word for you, which will neutralize your standing with the respective nation.
