Yarr, I have a dell d500 (Centrino 1.3 512MB RAM) which has an intel extreme graphics 2 (82852/82855 GM/GME) card. I'm pretty confident this card doesn't support hardware T&L (Intel says so).
I experienced the crash phenomenon too, but tried a suggestion I read in a post by NobleJMS (turning graphics options all the way up) which fixed the crashing problem.

Again, if it still crashes, try different combination of WORLD and OBJECTS graphic levels, and run the game.[/quote]
I played last night for about 6 hours without a crash. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

Of course the game is now rather jerky at times, but generally very playable.
Another issue is that occasionally a model's texture will fail to load and that model will render as a gold reflection object. (the models for the player character and the `sign-up` officer for the dutch pretty much never load)
All in all not perfect, but I have been able to play and am quite enjoying it. I have also experienced some joy turning down certain graphics options.
Yarr, give it a try, your mileage may vary.
