This is what the Sid Meier’s Pirates! Live the Life calls a War Canoe:

The reason I can say that the game considers these ships as War Canoes comes from the graphics files included in the DVD USA version. And how closely those graphics match the ships included here. The fact that these files and the USA version’s manual call it the Tartane also help.
You will notice that these are all of European design. Some of you will also notice that the dates given for these vessels is 19th century. The Tartane is a very old design. These are 19th century Tartanes like the Constitution is a late 18th century Frigate. And the frigate can be traced back to the 1600's.
The game is using this as the smallest vessel and the only one available to the Natives. How the natives got a hold of so many European vessels will remain a game mystery. Perhaps they did not want to go into what a real War Canoe is. More likely, a historically accurate War Canoe would be far too hard to find as the Europeans did not manage to keep (m)any examples.
As it is, the Tartane is extremely obscure, hats off to the game developers for finding this one.
