way to tell how many ships in group?

someone please tell me I am doing something wrong. On the map screen (sea navigation), is there any way to tell without engaging an enemy how many ships the enemy has? the displayed size of the ship doesnt seem to matter much - even tiny looking ships can have 3 or more ships in it.

and once engaged, if you've had the bad luck to be outnumbered - which you can't tell until you engage - you're screwed at times because the game just randomly puts your ships in the middle of the enemy ships, no matter how far away on the map you engaged them.

if this is the way it's supposed to work it ruins the game pretty much - I dont want to randomly engage someone, then reload until I find a fight I can win.

The Sail away only works properly with the SeaDog abilitty, the last navigator one... without that abilitty (or it was perk? out of game with some words in english) in some engangements "Sail away" is unavailable, even if you´ve a faster ship with enaough crew to sail properly and you can outrun them easily.

BEST REGARDS

If I noticed correctly, sail away is available:
- if you attack (examine) someone who doesn't want to attack you
- in case that someone is chasing you but is far enough and you examine him

It happen to me several times that pirates attacked me, they were near me, and sail away option appeared. I don't have any perks, abilities and so.

Marinx has hit the nail on the head.

Here is exactly how you get the 'Sail Away' option to show up....

When you see the hook icon show up, you are close enough to interact with a vessel that is 'chasing' you. If you hit the hot action key at that point, you will usually be allowed to sail off if they are far enough away from you. If you do nothing and they get too close, you will have no choice about the encounter.

Now the Sea Dog skill you are thinking of will give you the 'Sail Away' even if they sail up to the too close range.

Hope that helps everyone out!

It still won't allow you to evade them indefinitely, though. If you just sit still a window will eventually pop up where the "sail away" option is greyed out. But yeah, it does greatly reduce the annoyance of random encounters spawning all over the place.
