Whats the point of having 8 ships in my fleet?

Kuplo

Im trying to figure out the rational of keeping 8 ships in my fleet when I can only use one of them in a naval battle. The only thing I can think of is that I can store more "stuff" in the holds of those 8 ships then I could in just 1 ship, but there has to be more reason than that for keeping 8 ships in my fleet, especially since Im penalized in speed to the lowest ship speed in the fleet.

Any clues?

Yeah, its a stuff thing but it is a tactical thing also, when you get really good and can take fast galleons with your royal sloop its a stuff thing, but in the beginning you use ships suited to the battle type thing

When you start planning for land assaults on towns you may need multiple ships to carry the amount of troops you need. You can only get 180 guys or so on a Royal Sloop, but if you need to sack Havana, you'll need more than that. Not to mention, it takes quite a few tons of food to keep 4 or 5 months of chow on hand for a crew of 400. Then there is the issue of which ships require a larger crew etc... Nothing like having a slew of trade galleons eating into you total crew so that you can barely put 100 guys on your sloop of war or something. It's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Yes, when you want to do a land assault it is best to have a lot of men - which you can do with a lot of ships. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
