Worst Pirate Game

After Playing POTC (with the great build 13) for years I just picked up a used copy of CoAS and I am totally disappointed. This game is booooring. I played only 8 hours and didn't see more than two towns. everytime I leave the port there is one or two pirate vessel attacking. sinking them with this slow ship takes about 1 hour real time even with speeding up the battle. after at least finishing one pirate I reloaded the gane from the harbour save, i didn't want to spend another hour watching nothing. but even when I make it to the next port, same crap happens there again. there is no short cut, no escape from this boredom. So was the reviewer that gave this game a 9.0 on crack?
So I think this game is even worse than the first AoP. Are there any builds or mods out to make this a decent game?
I think I still have the PoTC game somewhere, maybe a new build is out....

Aye, matey, de early game truly ain't all dat fun, at times, fer de very reasons ye be speakin'! :facepalm

De encounters be too frequent an' it gits old a tryin' tew shake off 1, 2, or even 4 pirates, plus 3 or 4 Dutch jumpin' on yer tail fer good measure! :shrug

It does git a bit mo' better later on as ye git mo' experience an' a better ship!

Ahoy jkarolat, CoAS is indeed not an easy game, especially in the beginning. If you are playing the Peter Blood quest, you will find it even more so. It takes time to build up your skill level, you gave the game a whole 8 hours and have already decided it is the worst pirate game ever? That's quite a statement considering just how many bad pirate games have been made over the years. Personally, I have been playing this game since it's release back in May, and I have yet to be bored! There is a LOT more depth to this game than you will find in almost any other PC game. If your ship seems slow and unresponsive, it's because you are trying to sail a ship class that is beyond your level. All your other skills take a hit because of that. If your trying to sail anything other than a class 6 from the start, you are going to have a very hard time trying to do anything. There are plenty of threads on here about how to increase your skills, so I won't go into that. This game is far from perfect, but in my opinion, it is the best pirate game to come out in a long time.

CoAS was a disspointment to me because of the many bugs, ctds, dead-end missions, and poor naval combat. Having said that I can still see that this game, when properly modded, can have even greater potential then the PoTC builds. There are a few mods and fixes out that improve the game already.

A big problem when starting out is that you will often enter encounters being outclassed, outgunned, and out numbered. One thing that has helped me is to save my game everytime before I leave the harbor. If I find myself entering a bad situation, I simply reload and try again. In the beginning of the game I probably only have 1 success out of every 3 to 4 encounters. Thats alot of reloading saves, but it keeps me from giving up on the early game. Also if you do have a successful encounter, save your game before re-entering the world map.

Sorry jkarolat but thats why you think COAS is so bad, anyone who play's POTC with its builds will think COAS is not as good as those who have only every played COAS. Yes there are bugs, yes the game is harder but if it was too easy people would be annoyed and requesting there money back. You can't please everyone in the world so you have to find a ballance, some mods made already will suit some people perfectly but not everyone will want them or use them even though they like them, this could be due to extended battle lengths, more challanging encounters, or lower ranked ships in those encounters.

Personally you need to save more often but thats a given in most games today, save as Stowaway said just before you enter the world map that way you can alway's reload your game should something happen. When you see the grapple symbol show on the world map enter the battle then re-enter the world map inless its the Gentlemen Of Furtune (pirate fleet) you will see that those pirates have gone and you can sail on without those pirates interupting your journey. You do need to enter the battle asap though if you wait till the enemy is close to you then you will not be able to enter the world map straight away again.

As Thagarr said if your ship is slow then you are sailing something far to high for your rank, you can right click on the nav skill which will explain what amount of skill points will allow you to sail each class of ship, if you ever have red stats then you are sailing a ship above your skill level, i personally find COAS a very good game but then i have installed a few mods which improve the game play and have edited a few things (which are available on this forum) which improve things too. You say you gave 8 hours to the game, it takes over 8 hours to learn the game or addapt to the new key configeration.

An example you will learn is that each nation you hire crew from will have different skilled crew on offer, for example England have good sailers, France has good cannoneers, pirates have good fighters etc etc. If you pick up half crew at an English port and the second half at a French port you will have decent cannoneers and sailers. There skilols effect your ship aswell. Hiring a navigation officer will help you out aswell and will increase the speed your ship can sail at. The same for the cannoneer officer, the better the officer's stats the higher the improvement will be.

I would say give the game at least a few day's of game play before you make your final decision, and don't compare it to POTC because you will find reasons to pick faults with it, if i was to compare it to POTC i would say the weather is annoying, you can't sail from port to port without first loading the world map, you are almost alway's been chased by several ships which mostly out gun, class and number you. The smoke effects after firing your cannons is not as good, the sharks in COAS never junp out of the water making you leap out of your skin like they do in POTC etc etc. All these things might make you think boring game i will stick with POTC. I'm not saying POTC is the better game but i'm saying this is aq totally different game and needs to be looked at in the same way. Look at what POTC was and what it has become, don't judge too quick because COAS has a lot of potential, one example is in POTC if you wanted to add a texture for a ship to each nation you had to make a new ship for each nation, in COAS you make 1 ship and that ship can have 3 different textures so no need to make more than 1 type of it.

Hope you do give the game another chance, you will start to like it in time and thats what the game needs.

Here here, Well said Luke. ;) I'd give the game more than just a measely eight hours matey and you should add the JScombined mod as well, as it really enhances the depth of detail. Instant gratification this game is not - at least not for a little while into it. If you're not willing to invest some time you wont reap any rewards and this game has many to offer. There are quite a few things about this game I find superior to the POTC builds and we're just getting started out of the gate on modding it. In the words of the great space pirate Yoda, "Patience". The rewards of CoAS are there if you have the patience to build yourself up to the point you can get them. Victory feels great at level 53 man. Mmmmmm :dance
