Akella Sells Out

<!--quoteo(post=136478:date=Dec 22 2005, 03:34 AM:name=Keith)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Keith @ Dec 22 2005, 03:34 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->You know thats actually quite interesting at $100 for an enigne that looks that good, its a bargin. Possible if the Russians aswell were interested in helping out it might be a go'er ill have look further into the engine thingy<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Do not forget that in the Russian release the engine is not open yet and, moreover, protected by StarForce. Everybody expects the engine to be opened in the international releases (same story as with POTC - Russian modders used US release as the basis).

It is really not clear however to what extent the Playlogic's release will differ from the Russian one - check my today's post under 'What is Playlogic going to do' - some developers say that Playlogic is going to make the game way more arcadish.

I talked about the engine in combination with the question, why you as a community of modders don't try to make your own game instead of just modding other games.

The Torque-Engine (<a href="http://www.garagegames.com" target="_blank">www.garagegames.com</a>) me and Keith talked about would surely not fit into AOP or PotC. But you guys made already Ship-Models and reprogrammed parts of the game in C++, so the next step should not be to hard. Torque and other free or low-price Engines already have a lot features, you need for a game - Graphics, network,.....

So it is one thing to criticise the work akella made, but what shall be the next step?

If the engine is protected, you will not have possibility to correct bugs, which akella might not be able to fix. And who knows at which point they will stop the bug-fixing. If they do a good job - fine - all of us can buy a fantastic game and russians will get proper patches, but this would be the first time for akella to do so and i just ask myself, why they didn't do it before release....

If they leave us again alone with a buggy game, where do you want to go?
Back to SD1, AOS or PotC? They are quite old now. Most here played them to the end or (like me with AOS and PB) fighting with well known bugs and see more and more friends going away to other (non naval)games.

Foreward to The upcoming MMORPG's POTBS and POTC Online? Possible way, but some will get lost, because they don't want to pay the monthly fee, can't afford it or don't have broadband connection. And who knows if these games will be better? Up to know we just heared, what the devs of PotbS like to do and saw some pics and Videos. But you can't judge about it, before it is out, as you see at AOP. Mayby it will be totally crap and most stop playing after a short time.

I sure know where I'll go.

As for pirate stuff -- I think it's hopeless by now, you either succumb to POTBS (sorry, I just don't have time for MMORPGs), or you can keep on hoping that after 5 years of developing and 4 bug-ridden titles Akella will finally get it right someday (count me out on that).

My plan B, though, is to try to persuade Maddox Games into making naval sims, they've made virtual pilots happy, why not us? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> Even if they hated pirates, they'd still come up with a better game than anything Akella ever made, they're just in a different class when it comes to developing games and their MP actually works. Damn I wish it was possible to trade 'em. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Seabro, just curious, what do you think or know about Akella's <i><b>PT Boats: Knights of the Sea</b></i>? Fred Bob read somewhere Akella may use some of Maddox Games plane models from the IL-2 series... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I don't really keep an eye on that title, but seems like they do use some help from Maddox, although if it's only plane models then it won't make much difference, I'm afraid. I remember watching the gameplay trailer, it really had a Need for Speed feel to it, only with machine-guns and torpedos. Not my thing, but it can be fun playing on internet, I guess.
