Boarding problem with B14 version 4

dylan_noy

Landlubber
I am using the latest Build14 with updates.

I successfully boarded and cleared the top deck, moved down to cabin, won that battle, before finding myself suspended over the sea, unable to do anything. In the F2 screen, the only options accessible were "Passengers" and "Inventory". I was able to use F1 to quit (a shame as I'd picked up some good loot including battle armour).

I pressed F11 but the message disappeared quite quickly. I think it mentioned something about captains and cabins? Sorry not overly helpful. Hopefully, the error log will be attached to this post.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you installed everything correctly? You didn't accidentally install the Build 13 Update 2 on top of the Build 14 Alpha or anything, did you? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I don't think so as I have been adding the updates as they come along. I could try uninstalling everything and starting again - I am having problems accessing your web page to get all the files, however?

You need the following files:
<a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/b14_alpha3.zip" target="_blank">http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/b14_alpha3.zip</a>
<a href="http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/b14_alpha4_update.zip" target="_blank">http://www.s31clan.com/pietersmods/b14_alpha4_update.zip</a>

Install the first first, then the second.

Pieter,

So the sequence going back to the very start, should be to:

Install stock game
Install Build 13 (I have a copy of this saved)
Install the two files as above.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Dylan.

Yes, it is. After you did all that, also extract the file attached to this post to PROGRAM\INTERFACE. Otherwise the passengers interface screen won't work.

Pieter,

Thank you for all of your help. I re-installed evreything from the beginning and the ship capture worked fine. The problem re-surfaced once I changed my default starting skin to the "Barbossa" model (as I had previously done). Changing back to a default skin (e.g Will) still resulted in the crash occurring. However, after un-installing and re-installing again (and not messing around with the character model!), everything once again worked fine. I guess the problem must have been down to changing the player skin? I will add a note to the bug tracker.

After numerous attempts (mostly poor!) at boarding to test things out, I have noticed two things:

1. When you fire shot to initiate boarding, it says your repuation goes down, but after taking the ship, there is no change to the reputation on the "Character" interface?

2. I tried boarding on Swashbuckler level and some of the opponents must have the "Toughness" perk because their health seemed to go up after I hit them (admittedly only with a default average saber). This does suggest that this perk needs toning down a bit. Is there any way to do this manually? I personally don't choose the perk (as it seems to make you invincible) but it proved impossible to take the ship as the opponens were also invincible!

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Enemies sometimes do have the Toughness perk. To make that perk less strong, find the following code:

PROGRAM\Loc_ai\LAi_character.c:
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->            // El Rapido -->
            if(IsCharacterPerkOn(chr, "Toughness"))
            {
                hp = stf(chr_ai.hp) + dlthp*dltTime*80;
            }
            else
            {
                hp = stf(chr_ai.hp) + dlthp*dltTime;
            }
            float oldhp = hp;
            // El Rapido <--<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->Set *80 to something lower.

PROGRAM\elrapido.c:
<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    if(IsCharacterPerkOn(chr, "Toughness"))
    {
    HP = HP * 1.1;            // 10% health bonus for the tough guys
    chr.chr_ai.hp_dlt = 0.3;    // higher regeneration rate, default is 0.1
    }
    chr.chr_ai.hp_max = HP;
    return HP;<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->Set 0.3 to something lower.

I have heard word that setting the first to *40 and the second to 0.2 seems to work much better.

point 2: the toughness perk isn't a problem at all for me. an avarage saber is simply the third most crappy sword in the entire game. it's no wonder yo can't defeat someone with toughness. it would be possible, but you would need a reasonably high combat skill. you should manage with a better sword. fixing it up at a blacksmith to excellent level greatly increases the damage, so that might work as well. it is fairly easy to find a better sword, but you need to be level 5 to get a decent one. a needle is not that bad for a beginning player, and you can get a pretty good sword with a quest you can get in the douwesen tavern. talk to the guy in the green vest, then go to the governor. going to the governor makes this quest half as difficult, and gets you some money as well. you will need a positive reputation to be able to play this quest.

Pieter,

I didn't mind taking a reputation hit but it seemed strange after reporting in the top left of the screen that my reputation had dropped down to "Blody Terror" and when the battle was over I was still "Neutral"? There were other ships from the captured ship's party around si it wouldn't be that my actiions would have gone unrecorded?

Perhaps you did some good actions during the battle as well?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well there was no surrender option so I had to kill all of my opponents. At the interface you get when you have won the battle, I did take the remaining crew into my crew. If that counts as a good action?

i don't really think that you get a bonus for anything you choose, but you can easily avoid penalties to your reputation.

I had the same problem, but I could solve it. I bet you installed the B14A3 in the same way as me. I did it as I saw on Pieter's site. Before installation I've deleted the RESOURCE\MODELS\location\decks folder. I think this was what caused the problem, because when I've put this folder back to the game folder, everything worked well again.

BTW, I wasn't able to visit the Crew's quarter, the Cabin, and the Cargo hold too due to this problem.

Yes - I did do exactly this! I am having a few problems logging onto the bug tracker - perhaps could you add this solution as a note on the bug tracker?
