Bring me up to date

Mithridates

Landlubber
So, its been approximately 3 years since I've visited Pirates Ahoy, but it looks like the build has continued to progress nicely (if memory serves correctly, I think Build 8 was where I left off). There was a time that I was here everyday though.

As such, I've been looking around, but I can't find a central location that describes everything that is in the build. Most importantly, have you figured out how to get new ships in the game? New models for characters? New Islands even? So, if you are willing (and I recognize that you might not be) please fill me in and bring me up to date as to what all is included in Build 13, etc.

Also, if you can, let me know how this Age of Pirates thing compares to POTC, too.

I'm trying to decide if I should get it, or if I should order a new copy of POTC.

It would seem not according to this post:
<a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10987" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10987</a>
But I could be wrong.

I'm absolutely amazed at how far this has progressed. This is stunning work. Stunning. You should all be extremely proud of yourselves.

Does anyone know a site where I can download POTC? I can't seem to find my cd from a few years ago. I don't mind paying again... I'm talking about something like direct2drive.com.

Better go down to your retailer - 24.95+shipping from amazon.com even as retail version seems a bit high to me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsdown.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2dn" border="0" alt="thumbsdown.gif" />
It should be about 15$ by now...

Welcome to PiratesAhoy again, Mithridates VI! Nice to see an old member back! Even a member so old that we probably have never met before... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I never tried AoP, but I think that PotC with the Build modpack is superior to AoP as far as gameplay is concerned.

<!--quoteo(post=215220:date=Sep 23 2007, 03:34 AM:name=Mithridates VI)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Mithridates VI @ Sep 23 2007, 03:34 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I'm trying to decide if I should get it, or if I should order a new copy of POTC.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Both games should be pretty cheap nowadays. I think I once saw PotC available for under 10 euro's in the Netherlands. Last time I went to check, I couldn't even find AoP on the shelves anymore. Shame; I would've bought it if I could get it cheap somewhere.

<!--quoteo(post=215224:date=Sep 23 2007, 03:47 AM:name=Mithridates VI)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Mithridates VI @ Sep 23 2007, 03:47 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Is Nathan Kell still around?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I'm afraid not. He left halfway through the process of making Build 13 and I have not heard from him since. This was really unfortunate; I sincerely hope that one day he will return. In the meantime I took on the duties of modpack compiler and finished Build 13. Currently we are working on making Build 14 and Pirate_KK is the modpack compiler now. He took over from me when I had to leave for six months for a cadetship aboard the cruiseship MS Zuiderdam. We currently have the following game versions:
- <b>Build 13 Update 3:</b> Probably the most stable new Build release available
- <b>Build 14 Alpha 6:</b> Contains a whole bunch of new features and is reasonably stable as well
- <b>Build 14 Alpha 7:</b> Even more features, but this version seems to be a bit too buggy for most people
- <b>Build 14 Alpha 7 Plus:</b> This has only been released yesterday, so I don't have any conclusive information yet on how well it works. I tested it myself and found it pretty playable; I didn't encounter any major gamekilling bugs, but I did encounter my fair share of weird effects. See <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10988" target="_blank">here</a> for more information on this latest release.

So my new copy arrived and I've been playing through Build 13 for the last several hours. Its amazing. You've outdone yourselves.

However, there is a problem with CTD's upon entering the sea. I've searched through the forum and it looks like there is some consensus that this is caused by the changing of the date. But still, even when I try to avoid entering the sea at night, still its a 50% chance that it'll CTD. If anyone knows any fixes, please pass them along.

Also, I want to help. I can make skins. Let me know what you need.

That's about seven dollars here, although you can't find POTC anywhere now except maybe on ebay.

Did yo install the Build 13 Full or the Build 13 Final version? Install Build 13 Final; that one contains Update 3 which fixes several bugs. Also: Could you enable error logging and show us the system.log, compile.log and error.log generated after the crash?

If you could make some characters, that'd be great. I made a request for some reskinning <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10995" target="_blank">here</a> a coupe of days ago. These are the reskins we really need. But feel free to make anything you want; we are always happy with anything we can use. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

How do I enable error logging?

Also, no disrespect intended, I'm not "into" the movie characters. I would have no skeletons, squid people, or anything of the sort. Likewise, I doubt I could make a decent run at Davey Jones, his ship, or any of his sailors.

If there is anything else though, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll try to pick up where JMV left off several years ago with the naval officers and marines, except maybe for the late 17th century period in which we have set the game. I think the game also needs more civilian-type naval officers. The cities are populated with very "piratical" like characters. If I were the governor, I'd put the clamp down.

See <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">here</a>.

If you want to do something different than the movie character things, that is fine as well. We can use any characters you can come up with. Thomas the Terror recently did some work on the soldier skins and made some new ones, so I'm not sure what we would still need to do as far as that is concerned. I think it'd be great to have some more respectable-looking townsfolk in the game though. What I would also like is to have some unique models for certain quest characters, such as Ewan Glover and others.

There is no need for Royal Navy characters, I made them from midshipman till admiral (maybe I missed some, like rear admiral and post captain, but the rest I have) I have the base of the characters of Deringer's skins, but I changed the trousers and stockings.

We need: French officers, Spanish and Dutch. Unique quest characters. Rich citizens. But everything you will come up with is fine too.

could you please tell us which skins you made, and show screens if you still have some new skins?

I'd really like to get back into modding, but I'm having a lot of difficulty getting this new build to work properly. I'm reinstalling the game right now because I suspect something happened as I was messing with the files. Also, regarding the "entering the sea" CTD, does it still occur if the food/rum rations are turned off?

When you say Spanish, Dutch, and French officers, do you mean Napoleonic or 1690's?

I've played around in Build 14 and I noticed a lot of new character models. But when I talk to them, they are skeletons in the top left corner Is this a bug or intentional? Some of the models made me start thinking about "Barbary Corsairs," but if they are bugged and create skeletons in the top left, I won't bother with a new skinpack for North African pirates. Besides, there are very few skins which look like privateers and not pirates (by privateer I mean less dangerous and more accomplished, but not to the extreme of being aristocratic). Perhaps I should work on those, rather than on a skin pack for a nationality that does not exist.

Lastly, you guys have really done terrific work. The build is so user friendly and so open ended (always what I wanted). I'm having difficulty finding my way around the files though. For example, before, if I wanted to see how a model looked in game, I would replace Malcolm with the model I was working on. Likewise, if I was working on a new ship, I would make the character start the game with the ship and see how it looked. But, the file system is so different now, I can't find my way around to test out ships and characters in game. Also, I tried to add more characters to the model selection screen and had great difficulty with that (breaking the game, hence I'm reinstalling).

I mean the period 1750, just like the deringer skins. I think I could better do those navy officers myself. I really like your idea of more privateers, we just lack those. And I think those skeleton heads are bugs.

The skeleton heads show up on the characters taken from Age of Pirates. These characters don't have head files at all, so Maximus made them show a skeleton head for the time being. Previously they showed no head at all.

I think those CTDs still occur with food and rum rations turned off. Somebody found out it might have to do with having a completely full cargo hold.

You can set the Malcolm skin with no problem in PROGRAM\Characters\init\TempQuestCharacters.c. Setting the starting ship used to work relatively easily by replacing one of the starting ships in PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h. Since Alpha 7 Plus we have an Options interface for these settings though, with which you can select the starting ship options. This does not work entirely properly yet, because you can't select all ships yet. What I now do to test a ship is to add the following in PROGRAM\console.c:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->    GiveShip2Character(pchar,"Shiptype","Ship Name",NATION);
    SetCrewQuantity(&pchar, GetMaxCrewQuantity(&pchar));<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
If you then press F12, you will be given the ship immediately. This is really useful, because you don't need to start a new game. Also if you play in windowed mode, you can modify this line to choose a new ship without reloading the game at all.

Changing the starting model options can be done in the Options>Advanced Options menu in Build 14 Alpha 7 Plus. Adding additional options without replacing anything has become rather complicated since the BuildSettings nterface though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

If you have any trouble changing/making anything, just post here and we'll try to help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

i think that's what i aggrevated once when i tried to sail without a ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> remember that bug? i didn't mind getting a manowar out of nowhere, but it's still a bug, and should be fixed. besides that, it had some pretty nasty side-effects on my character.
