Capturing a Colony and other questions

Silva

Landlubber
I've been reading the forum but I can't find a direct answer (and my game didn't brought the manual) so I'm sorry if these have already been answered:

- How exactly do I capture a colony? DO I have to defeat the garrison on the fort? and How exaclty is that done, just pound them into submission?

- On the pirate starting Island (Isla Mona) there is a governor's house but entry isn't available. What's the deal with that? Does it become available eventually? How can I raise my reputation with the pirates if there is no governor?

- In order to increase my fleet I must have points in the correct skill but along with that I need an officer who can take the role of captain. Which officers are these? Or are they simple officers put into a specific job on our own ship?

Cheers and thanks. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

I put the link in my sig. for future ref.

I don't see much in the walkthrough about capturing colonies, so to answer Silva's first question:

To capture a colony, you must first defeat the fort's guns, which will be tough as there are usually a lot of them and, unless you gave yourself a very easy setup to start with, they're probably heavier than anything your ship can carry. When half the fort's guns are destroyed, and if your ship is close enough to the fort, you can land troops and fight the garrison, which is pretty much the same as boarding a ship - an icon appears on the screen and you press F3 to start the fight. Once you've defeated the garrison, you have the choice of what to do to the colony. You can pillage (steal some treasure, kill some people, destroy some buildings); raze (steal all the treasure, kill most of the people, destroy most of the buildings); or capture. You can capture the colony for a nation only if you're under orders from that nation's governor to do so. Or you can capture it for yourself, in which case all nations immediately hate you even if they liked you before. (If you started out as a pirate on Isla Mona, they already all hate you anyway!)

Capturing ships is covered in the walkthrough, but to answer your question, you need a free officer - one who is not assigned to any job. If all your officers are assigned, you can remove one from his post to allow him to command a prize ship.
