Back in the late 1980's, before they dreamed of Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D, John Romero and a lot of the other members of ID software worked for a company called Softdisk. Softdisk published a game magazine that was released on floppy disk or "magazettes", for "magazine on diskette." They later also worked on a disk magazine called Gamers Edge. Some were for PC and some were for the Apple II's I used in school. I had several of these during that time, usually they contained some good computer articles on basic programing, games and some hardware. They also did include some free games as well.

A few of those games featured a character named Dangerous Dave! Dangerous Dave was of course, always doing something dangerous, like entering a Haunted Mansion, Rescuing someone, or entering a Deserted Pirate Hideout. A recreation of that last one, originally a 1990 DOS game, has just been released by John Romero over on iTunes for free! There have been versions of it floating around on Abandon-ware sites for quite some time, but this is probably the easiest way to get it on an Apple product.

Here is a short Youtube video of the Apple II version!
