Does AI boarding actually work?

I got myself a 2 ship fleet now and in a battle after I've beaten up an enemy galleon I went after the next target and ordered my companion ship to board the galleon.

Didn't work so well... by the time I had sunk the other attackers my companion is still sitting next to the galleon, blasting away with grape shots... the galleon crew is down to minimum, sails destroyed, hull maybe 25% left and he still is not boarding.
I stopped and watched, he continued to grape shot her until she finally blew up and took my companions ship down with her. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
Anyone had more luck with companion boarding operations?

I've seen posts from players that have said they have seen AI ships board and win the boarding fight.

if you travel around to different ports, pirate ports especially have good gunners and fighters sometimes some other national ports to i have found good fighting crews. but pirate port recruits usually suck at sailing skills, so mix and match your crews to balance their skills or pick up a heavy fighting crew if your going fort raiding cause noob fighters will get destroyed in fort raids for sure.

one thing i will say when i have ordered my ships to board while raiding merchant fleets either the ai boats do not loot at all or they boarded the garbage ships because there was no gold or silver in their holds.
