Does raking do anything?

Good afternoon, historically raking fire is devastating on the target ship. I don't seem to notice anything different in game when raking. Does anyone know if raking (firing on the target's bow or stern) causes extra damage?

In original PotC, it did nothing.
In PotC: New Horizons we added the feature so that it does.

I have no clue if this feature was ever copied by the official developers of the subsequent games in the series though.
