engines and their modding editors

Ok there i am reinstalling Baldurs Gate as there is a mod that allows you to playi it using the BGII engine, then i was thinking, BG never was a mod friendly engine at the beginning yet now there are a fair few big mods for it, i could also say that about a few other engines that have gone this way, then i was thinking but but that definition a game with a really good editor should have hundreds of big mods out.. so i begin thinking about games with good editors, 2 come to mind morrowind and NWN but neither of these games have big complete mods, thousands of small ones but hardly any biggies considering their popularity...why? The i though it must be the easier it becomes the less the serious modders want to play with it...is it a elitist thing to say "I made a great mod on a dodgy engine" Or is is that the good modders dont want to get caught up with the other ...dare i say newbie modders?

Whats everyone think on this..

Hmm. thought provokin' Keith me matey! What be a "good modder"? Heh Heh! Thar be some clever chaps dat be a like a flash in de pan... do some cool stuff an' den off thay go fer anudder new game! Den thar be de steady, persistant, `trial-n`-error types dat may not be clever but git stuck into it an' make sumptin' worth playin'! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Fred Bob be impressed wid all de complete mod packages made fer Battlefield 1942. Dat be an example o' a game wid an architecture conducive te full blown modding! Ye kin 'ave multiple independent BF total conversion mods in de same BF installation, startin' each one wid different command line parameters.

Im thinking that the good modders start a GRAND HUGE mod (like say the mod for Morrowind - Tariel Rebuild) and when they almost finish (or `60-70`% done) the mod and WAMMO! some thing happens like say real life stuff ot they start modding another game. I started to mod with GTA3 made some skins and i started a huge remake of the game with some friends and when we ware about `40-50`% ready with the mod we started to play `GTA-VC` and other games and we left the mod.

It's mostly a thing to do with time.
Creating big mods that change lots of things are very time consuming, and therefore people prefer to create smaller mods, that they can continue if they have time and people like it.
Simple as that really.
