Era Progression?

I was just curious, does the archipeligo / townships / available ships / anything change when the yearly progression ticks over into what would have been a different age if chosen at start? Or is it simply the 'loaded situation' to remain forever?

The period does not change, partly because it would be a nightmare to code, and partly because it would look a bit silly. At exactly 0:00 on 1st January, every soldier in every town suddenly gets a new uniform, a bunch of ships are scrapped and a bunch more are launched. xD It could also mess up your game if, for example, you're in Spanish Puerto la Cruz, it suddenly changes into English Governor's Harbour overnight, and you're friendly to Spain but hostile to England.

So once you've chosen your period by picking a starting year, or the period and starting year have been set by your choice of storyline, the period remains fixed for the rest of the game.

Yup; exactly.

In addition, time progression while ingame is so slow that to reach the next period, you either have to start already right on the edge or play REEEAAAL long.
So we just figured the simple approach cover 95% of the cases; so that'll have to do...

A full changing game world would be really cool too.
But then you get more into a Civilization sort of setting, don't you?
Would be amazing; but also quuuiiiite the feat to pull off!
