The reason the fort fired on you might be because the pirates are hostile to you. By raising a pirate flag, you can trick them into believing you are a pirate so that you can enter safely and exit safely, but there's always a slight risk that you might be recognized. I think that is the case here: You were recognized and that's why you were being fired upon.

About the crewmembers climbing up fallen masts: There's nothing much we can do about it. The crewmembers walk on a walk file that is not modified by the presence of the masts. So once the masts fall off, the crewmember still use the original walk file that was made for the ship WITH masts. Result: The crewmembers can climb into masts that have fallen off.
 
the mefisto is one of the few ships that looks good without it's masts. that second one looks really funny. looks like there's a huge person jumping on the ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

this one really made me luagh: (i adjusted it a little bit to fit reality)

i was in a gunboat, trying to board a cutter. i was trying to board it near port au prince, close to the big rock and the reefs next to it. (it's actually quite fun trying to maneuver between them with a class six or seven ship) we where both going around in a circle, he in the inner circle, i in the outer one. then, we went past the big rock. he only just made it, but unfortunatly, i just didn't. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> as the rock is sloped and i was very near to the cutter, me and my ship got launched off the big rock, and me, my crew, and all the other contents of the gunboat got bucketed onto the cutter. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> (what actually happended was this: i smacked into the rock, making a sharp turn as a result, becoming able to board him. the made up part was probably what would really happen)
 
ouch....among the funniest things that has ever happened to me is when i was sailing the Pearl at QC, and was manouvering around the rocks near the port, trying to get at a Pinnace that was shooting at me. i got close, but got caught between 2 of the rocks. i bounced off of the small one, then off the big one, then against the Pinnaces hull...i was nearly wrecked in the process, and the Pinnace ended up with Mrs. Pearl sitting next to the captain in his cabin <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> shortly before Davy Jones decided to end the hilarious situation by pulling it down to the depths. i sailed into QC, patched up my ship, and continued on my merry way, with Mrs. pearl finally being repositioned on my bow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />

NOTE: the figurehead didn't actually come off...but im imagining it would if i had actually bounced off 2 rocks then plowed [sp?] bow first into the left side of a Pinnace's stern...

it's rather noticable that everytime you enter tortuga, there's a fight, don't you think? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> i enter tortuga, and: 'oh, here we go again!' <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> i recently made quite an amazing performance. i encountered a manowar, a battleship and an escalated battleship when i only had the pirate corvette and fred bob to accompany me, i was only level 9 by then. i went up 3 levels there, simply by boarding the manowar by ramming it, taking it over, scuttling my corvette, running across the ship to board the escalated battleship, scuttling it afterwards, and then intercepting the battleship while it was trying to give me a broadside by doing a quick turn-around, boarding it, and scuttling that one as well. i can tell you, my sword arm was pretty tired after that! oh: nothing of this was made up. the ships had collided with each other due to a lack of wind so i could simply walk across one ship to the other. the battleship was a bit to far away to do that, but i already told you what i did with that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />
 
not everytime...i dont find ship battles there often, or even normal land fights. even the tavern is calm!
dunno why the land is quiet...but maybe there arent any sea battles because im on the Pearl....they fear The Pearl...<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />
 
i'd just run it over, like i do with everything else. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> someone made pretty short work of the pearl by squishing it between kheal roa and his ship. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/slap.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":slap" border="0" alt="slap.gif" />
 
not my Pearl though....it's uncatchable, and can turn around quite quickly when i need it too....

note: EVEN the MOWs are running from me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jackhat.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":j2" border="0" alt="jackhat.gif" />
 
not mine! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> i'll just blow your sails off until you'll run out of sailcloth to fix your ship up. or i'll simply shoot your masts off. i'm getting pretty good at it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" /> even the pearl would be going nowhere without sails. but i trust that you would roll out the sweeps. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> but i think i know what to do with those. i'll just sail very close past you and nock them off, after destroying quite a few of your cannons. i think that you would actually be going around in circles after that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> but there is one downside to all that: when i board you, the ship would be pretty useless! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> and i'd hate scuttling it. i'd just take it in tow.
