Game Speed

<!--QuoteBegin-Rabiddogg+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Rabiddogg)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I think some of you are missing the whole point of this game.In reality a pirate had a very limited amount of time to amass enough wealth to retire on. I think `6-8` hours per pirate career runs parallel to that theme.

I dont care how the pirates had it...

I just want the game to be as fun as possible.....

Can all people in here have wrong????? everybody seems to wanna have a much longer career (as it was in Original Pirates).

if there will be `6-8` hour career then I actually aint sure if I should buy the game or not.

I am not a fan of replays.

I don't understand this, replay value has been the hallmark and legacy of everyone of Sid's designs. Railroad Tycoon, Pirates, Red Storm Rising, the Civ series, Gettysburg, etc, the reason these games have been so popular and so long lasting is not because of one long play through session, but because you can play again and again with different circumstances and different outcomes every time. No two sessions were ever the same.

This `6-8` hour thing doesn't bother me, in fact as much as I played the original game, I don't ever remember a single career really lasting much longer than that (it seemed long because I would play over several nights). What I do remember is spending MANY hours starting new careers as a different nationality in a different time period with different attributes and facing new challenges each time I set sail.

I think people are getting too obsessed on this one aspect and missing the big picture, replay value, which the original Pirates had in spades. My hope is 10 years from now I'm still playing the new version for the very same reason.

Well, I don't want a neverending Game, but a Career should last a little longer then `6-8` hours.

In the C64 version the Career did last longer then `6-8` hours because I can remeber sitting on my C64 for days playing `6-8` hours per day on one Career. I wish I had so much time now. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I would like to have atleast about `30-33` hours per Career.

The question is, what will you be able to achieve in `6-8` hours?
Conquering the whole Carribean in `6-8` hours?
So if you can reach the Rank of Gouvernour in only `6-8` hours I fear the Game would be too easy!

I think the time limit and aging are important cool new factors, but I feel like 8 hours is a little short. At least give me `16-20` hours as the same character. Reply value is good, but why replay if you couldn't immerse yourself in the gameplay the first time. I fear it will feel more like an arcade game than an RPG. I wonder if this design is partly a result of it being released also on a console. Marketing and demographic factors are taken into account when designing a game. With a few notable expections, such as Final Fantasy, most RPGs only have a small market on consoles. Maybe the 8 hour limit was to cater to the average console and casual PC gamer. I will still buy the game and give it a try. Eight hours per character may end up being better than I think, but I have major reservations about it.

But we are all different people. Some people prefer to play short game swhile others prefer to play long..

I actually only played one career in Pirates and it took me almost three years to complete it. I ended up as the Kings advisor. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> When I was finnished with that it jsut wasnt fun anymore.

so say that I will end up as Kings advisor after one evening this time. What should I do after that???? I can understand that people find the replay value important but I am just not like that.

This game is going to be sweet and you all know it. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

I just hope the release does'nt get delayed because of this. Think about it everyone wants the game length to be extended from `6-8` hours to `20-30` hours. They would have to rethink the whole game!

Maybe they should have the option where you could disable aging and play a completly open ended game without scoring. I for one am not a fan of this kind of game. I like there to be a goal. I like for there to be a ending point.

Besides this game is going to be completly moddable. So whatever the players don't like about the game they will be able to change. Look at POTC was a pile of crap. But because of the comunity the game has been turned into a slightly lesser pile of crap. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />

I look at the `6-8` hour career like this. You're dying to run a mile. But you only have 1 minute. How far in to a mile can you get in one minute?

Okay, just for giggles last night, I sat down to play a round of Pirates! Gold on my old 486 (had to reinstall DOS too... don't ask). I started out on the Journeyman level. After about 7 hours of `non-stop` playing (I was up real late but was off work today), I had taken old Cap'n Toast to the end of his career. I made some mistakes, and had some success. I had about 4 decent cruises and a couple other ones that went pretty badly. Ended up retiring as a Captain of the guard. Mid to low end ranking in my opinion.

I can say that when you are island hopping around St Kitts or Nevis and the wind is right you can bounce from island to island in seconds. But it's a LONG BORING voyage from Panama back up the coast to Port Royale. If it were any slower, it would have been `un-fun`.

To second what was said above, there is one thing that Sid's games have always done right. And that is replay value. If you are not a game replayer, perhaps this game will make you into one. If you have tried CIV III as just about every nationality, difficulty level, and land mass, then you already know what I mean.

When I retired last night, I thought, "Maybe I should start out with a dutch cargo fluyt and run goods back and forth until England declares war on the Dutch in about 1667 (or whatever year it was), then I can sack Nevis when she's fat!" It's this kind of stuff that brings me back to the game. As I was sailing around, I skimmed the FAQ for the new game and imagined how the new features would impact the game I was playing... Needless to say, this will be the game that I wanted Pirates! Gold to be 12 years ago.

I have played every Sid Meier title since Solo Flight on my Atari 800XL in 1984ish. I liked some better than others, but they were always pretty well done. Ad far as the pace of the game goes, I trust Sid to do it right again. The fact that he dumped the old land combat system and revamped it at the last minute (all in the name of fun), makes me confident that he'll get the game right and that he is committed to getting it right, even if it means last minute changes. I'd rather have a good prouct a month late than a buggy, `un-fun` one on time!

In Sid I trust! This game will be great! Sail HO!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

I think most of us would agree to your last few comments. That we rather have a game a month (or more!) late than have a screwed up game on time. That would be a disaster.

I also agree that the game will be great as other games I've played such as CivIII.

I am so lucky to have gotten CivIII... I was so unfamiliar with any strategy games at the time and had almost gotten another strategy game instead of Civ. When I got it, it was a blast. One thing I am sure of that the most fun you have playing a game is when you first start to get to know the game -- when you are not familiar with anything you do. That is fun. It is fun because you learn and get surprised! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />
Even when I got to know how to play Civ, I learned new things about the game each day, weather it was PTW or C3C!
I think this is so unique about Sid's games. You keep having fun - not just fun from playing the game itself - but fun learning new things as you go years from when you have bought the game.

It is amazing to me how Firaxis is able to create a game so when you have passed the first learning stage, you still continue learning. This kind of drags along throughout your playing experience.

I also hope, as others probably do too, Pirates! is the same. I know I will have the most fun the first couple of weeks or months. But afterwards, what counts, is you learning the details about the game. That may be evolving new strategies or playing different styles.
That is fun.

I think that the game should be longer than `6-8` hours, i vote for `15-20` hours or `in-game` options that will let us choose <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

According to the poll on the first page 95% of the gamers dont want the length of the game to be set to `6-8` hours..

55% want a never ending game, 24% want moddable age while 16% wants a game that last a few days.

only 5% for the `6-8` hours career.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

isnt this answer on the question??????

the consumer is always right......

I don't see it as being an answer on the question, so much as a survey of opinions, with the majority wanting something that is completely different than what I want (that being a never ending game). I guess if you are not one of the 55%, then you can't really say the consumer is always right. Guess I am not the right consumer.
