Greenwich maritime art

Hi Keith and others. Although I put this page somewhere else aready in the past and even though it isn´t directly about plans of ships I think this website is so great that I had to put it here again. There are many historical paintings of naval themes with interesting historical descritiptions of famous ships, battles and persons. I spent many hours on this website already and I like it very much. I hope you will like it too. Those ships on the paintings are so accurate in many cases as it is said somewhere on this website, that anybody can do an image for oneself how those ships and all maritime life looked like in those times. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Rad, Yeah i've spent a fair bit of time there aswell. Im thinking about getting a couple of the prints to. Just so many to choose from...

I hope you don´t mind I put this link here. But have a look at copyrights there. They seems to me a little strict. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Yeah, If i were to get any it would be for my own personal use.

Its actually a tricky one with the plans aswell. Im not sure eactly where i stand on the orginals. I know with the prints, they are copyrighted as they are recent works. But as far as im concerned you \cannot copyright a plan from 300 years ago....

I think they last 50 years, if I am not mistaken. But I think in this case there are somehow asserted the Copyrights of this museum as it is written there. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
So, I can tell you I am a little confused by all this copyright issue generally. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

WB, Rad! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Great link! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> I love browsing through that collection.

Copyright on a historical piece or painting in a museum, as I understand it, belongs to the owner of the piece - if it's in a museum, presumably the museum holds the copyright and you cannot use any images of the piece for profit. THEY can reproduce and sell prints, but you cannot, and you are not really supposed to show the print without their permission.

I can imagine a museum legal department would have a field day with what has been sold over eBay - I wonder about that all the time as I see obvious non-licensed prints for sale there all the time. The question is would they bother prosecuting someone like us for posting images?

I'm sure you can ask the museum if you can reproduce it here... They might not mind, especially if you post a link to their collection.

Hi, Catalina. I don´t want to reproduce here anything, rather Keith thought about it. But I think it was suffice to put the link here and anybody can enjoy by those great paintings. I think it is absolutely legal. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Yes, it's legal for a link. I was just commenting in general, not at you specifically. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hi, mates. I don´t know, but when I sit to my computer and watch this paintings and read the comments to those historical events I can do it many hours and I am still not bored by it. And I can imagine how those great, powerful and highly decorated ships looked like and how the most famous figures of maritime life then looked like and on the base of that I am trying to absorb all the atmosphere of those times. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I like the maps on that site. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
