Help with fencing...

I am having some difficulties surviving - there is one very powerful move opponents like to use a lot (that one that goes right through any blocking attempts) and one or two of those hits usually kill me.
If I set the time to 0.75 or 0.5 I clearly see such a blow coming but I dont know what to do against it and usually this means reloading... and advise from the master swordsmen here?

Use the feint or parry move. Shift+right click. Alternately, you can use a quick jab to interrupt the opponent's attack.

Middle mouse button also helps a lot to finish of an opponent, as long as your duel it's against one man.
Personal perks to get are the health and energy perk taken at the early levels. That way you'll end up with lots of health and energy, being able to sustain an attack from 3-4 enemies. The fencing perks, the shooting perks, the perks that will increase the damage of your attack are also needed to have a succesful fighter. Berserk it's a nice perk, but as its name says, it's a tradeoff: you do quite a bit amount of damage, but your defense it's vastly reduced.

Easier said than done - I tried to beat that Spanish captain from Peter Blood quest for almost 2h with countless reloads before I finally was victorious.
And I think it did only win because he laughed so hard about me that he totally forgot to fight one round or something... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />
Guess I need a training dummy or something really bad, doh!

I played late into the game on Captain difficulty and its pretty easy, no problems, and later on gets far TOO easy. But I've restarted on Commodore difficulty and its a whole new game...too hard if anything during the start. The guy from your plantation quests at the start that you need his finger, several several reloads to beat this guy. I'm sure it gets easier as you level but its insane right now.

For higher difficulty I find its best to NOT use the power attack unless their constantly blocking, otherwise its quick slashes and if you see their hand moving up instead of parrying its much safer to back up real quick then back forward quick so they don't pull their pistol out (a single power attack or single pistol shot and your dead at this difficulty).
